Real Madrid's record signing injured his ankle in a Champions League match on Sept. 30 and has not played since aggravating it in Portugal's 3-0 win over Hungary 10 days later.

On Thursday, the club said tests conducted by a specialist in the Netherlands revealed he needed another two weeks of treatment.

Real Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano and coach Manuel Pellegrini both said on Friday that the player would not be joining the Portugal squad.

"I am going to call up Cristiano Ronaldo and I hope he can help us even if it is just for a few minutes," Queiroz told the TVI24 news channel.

"I will call him up for sure, then it is a medical question", Queiroz said, adding that the player would be examined the national team doctors.

Queiroz said the squad for the playoff against Bosnia in Lisbon on Nov. 14 and in Zenica four days later would not include Chelsea right back Jose Bosingwa due to a knee injury, but "may include one or two surprises".

The coach is due to announce the squad on Sunday.

  2. 12-10 if anybody here is ignorant, then it's you both! portugal has much stronger squad than bosnia and it would bea huge upset if they failed to qualify. they have few world class players like ronaldo, sabrosa, carvalho, pepe or bosingwa and few who aspire to become one in the future like moutinho, veloso or nani so on the paper bosnia is no match, of course bosnia has some good players too like bundesliga trio and pjanic from lyon but with such leaky defence they have very little chance against portugal with or without ronaldo!!

  6. 10- Andrew, do you think most of the idiots out here even know these good players. They are probably band wagon jumpers, who usually support the team which is winning. So talking about style of play or class in these forums seldom is of any use. Most of the guys like No 8 are totally ignorant of even the basic stuff. So you are just wasting time here trying to put your point across, seriously, no point

  8. 8 - lol you obviously haven't been following football of late because the Bosnians produced several class attacking players who are better than Portugal's current crop: Dzeko, Ibisevic, Misimovic and Pjanic prove that. Ronaldo is the only player who is better at the moment.

  9. portugal has too much quality and class to stumble in the tie with bosnia. they don't need ronaldo now. let him fully recover. it was bad enough they forced him to play with hungary. queiroz should be sacked regardless, he did an awful job so far with the top quality players portugal has.

  14. anthony - nani already got the portuguese a shot at qualification when thye looked down and out with ronaldo playing!
Personally, i haven't rated nani's club performances so far but he has been much better at international level & scored a few vital goals for portugal during qualifying. You can't simply analyse his club form and then say he will be poor for portugal when he has actually helped them get nearer to qualification.

  15. Ronaldo will be the person to say if he plays or not. He's the best player in the world and should want to play in the world cup next year. If he doesn't play in the qualifier,Nani won't carry Portugal to South Africa.
