Rafael Benitez has held talks with his Liverpool bosses over the implications if the club fail to reach the last 16 of this season's Champions League.
Liverpool have never failed to reach the last 16 under Benitez's management, but they are in grave danger of that eventuality now with qualification from Group E out of their hands after the midweek draw in Lyon.
They must hope that Lyon win their next match away to Fiorentina, and that Liverpool win their final two group games to produce the "miracle" Benitez admits they need now.
He said: "I spoke to Christian Purslow (Liverpool's managing director) the other day about the finances.
"The first thing, though, is that we have confidence we can still reach the last 16 of the Champions League this season.
"But whatever happens, the budget was done for this season based on us only qualifying for the group stages. And we did that, that is complete. Whether we can still bring in more money, we will wait and see."

if liverpool wants to die, let them do that honourably by not exceeding the group stage. i submit.
All they can do it look forward from now, and learn from mistakes. It's a long season left. We're less than 10 points behind. Encourge them instead of slagging em.
A team with the history of Liverpool should not be in a position where they need other teams to win so they can proceed into the play-offs. It's a disgrace..The biggest problem is not when Gerrard and Torres get injured, its because there are too many ordinary players and not enough quality in the squad.
Sell the rubbish in January and concentrate on bringing in Top quality players, you only have to look at Chelski and Man Ure, as much as i hate to say it both squads are full of quality players.
Until the powers at the top see that Rafa is so over-rated and hasn't the ability to take this club to the top then i'm afraid Liverpool FC and all its devoted followers will have to put up with always being oh so rans.
