Rafael Benitez believes Fernando Torres will be fit to face Birmingham on Monday, but rates Steven Gerrard as doubtful for the Barclays Premier League clash at Anfield.
Both players are likely to be given until the last minute before a final decision is made on their respective groin injuries, but the Liverpool boss maintains that he does not expect either to be selected for their national squads next weekend.
Beintez said: "Gerrard was training and working with the physios on Friday. Will he be fit or just available? We don't know yet. Torres has been to Spain to see a specialist and we have discussed it all with our medical staff. He is a little better than he was before."
He added: "He will train and work with the physios. Whether he will be okay to play against Birmingham, we do not know that either, yet.
"He could play and we must be careful with him. We will look at the situation after every training session."
He added: "The experience I have had for many years with this sort of problem is to carry on and see how players react. Some players react different.
"Some can play all season with the problem, some need to stop and rest. They are all different.
"Torres is the one who can play. He has played in pain and he wants to play for the team, he has a great mentality. I believe we can carry on with him.
"I have been very surprised by the criticism of my decisions, people can see that Fernando is not fit. We have had to decide how long he can play and when he must stop."

What Liverpool need is the yanks out, arabs in with some cash to spend and a manager with motivation power and passion like Martin o'neil.
Mourinho only won the title with a truck load of money behind him, i don't believe he could do any better than Rafa with monetary constraints we have at liverpool , In Rafa we trust. YNWA.
What do U call a gay couple? Man United

I know I should not say this as a Liverpool fan, but the title this season is between Arsenal and Chelsea and it would be nice if Arsenal could win it to prove that you can win a title with the brand of football they are playing. As for Liverpool, well I am afraid, we are unlikely to win anything this season even if Gerrard and Torres are both fit. The point is that Liverpool do not have anough quality players to warrant winning anything. Take Gerrard and Torres out of Liverpool and I can't see any difference between them and Hull, Stoke, Portsmouth etc. Until Liverpool add more quality and stop relying heavily on just two two players in Gerrard and Torres for glory, they will win absolutely nothing. I said this before the season started and I am repeating it yet once again that Liverpool need one more proven striker to partner with/deputize for Torres and they also need couple of world class defenders not average defenders they have got at the moment. The problem is that because Liverpool got lucky with many of their matches last season winning through share luck and not ability and they came second behind MU gave everyone a false sense of hope.
For what its worth I think you can't blame Benitez for all the problems at Liverpool. Whilst his player dealings are just bizarre - Bellamy, Keane, Crouch etc etc the problem is you don't produce any young players, or develop players (can't think of the last player who actually became a better player for being at Liverpool - @#$% coaching?).
The obsession with other people's spending power is a waste of time. Just look at teams like Valencia, West Ham & dare I say it UTD for inspiration.
Fergie put his faith in developing youth and still does. Where is Liverpools Danny Wellbeck?
Fergie sticks with players who show strength of character - Fletcher, RVN & Hargreaves -Liverpool let Keane go!.
Irrespective of how you do this season, you should face it Liverpool has lost its way.
Andy Jones- i'm not sure you lost concentration for just a minute?
I agree with what you're saying re the mid season window, the point i'm trying to get across is we need better depth of quality in the club and not be so dependent on Torres and Gerrard. I know he hasn't had the money promised but how can you justify signings like voronin, babel, ngog who everytime they grace the pitch, they are useless. One goal every god knows how many months from babel does not make any difference!
Some fans love Rafa for the Champions league victory others just want to see Liverpool shut the manxs up and lift the title. Me i'm for the title, its long overdue.
As for your comments on Champions league, the only reason we won was because captain amazing took control of the game in the second half and the rest of the team followed from there. Rafa gee'd them up i'm sure but he sent that team out in the first half with a plan and ended the half 3-0 down!
I look forward whole heartedly to seeing a manager at Liverpool like Mourinho that has an idea how to win the Premiership and beyond.
If you had ever played football which i doubt you would know its the players that win you a game not the manager. Sure he can advise tactics etc but if the players he has on the pitch are @#$%, you've already lost the game.
replace rafa with mourinho n we'll be the league champions in no time....
Andy Jones :- it's good to hear some sense on here for a change keep up the good work. YNWA..
And comment 13 should say I'd play Babel before the hopeless Voronin.
This site is cr4p, that comment was supposed to have 150 characters left so why did it cut the end off it?
Oh and comment 12 should say "Sell the rubbish in January?" not "in the summer". I was so stunned by your comment that I lost concentration for a minute ;-)
GI Joe - Your comments are probably the most amusing of the lot.
If you honestly think Carragher is "way past his prime" at 31 you've lost the plot. He's had a dip in form for sure, which has oddly enough come at the same time as him having to play in a defence alongside Kyrgiakos (who isn't that good but see comment 11 for the reasons we had to make do with him) and Insua (who will be a good player for us in the long term but is currently not playing well, after a good spell when he was first brought into the squad last season). Carra is trying to do his own job and is also being pulled all over the pitch trying to cover for those two (and Skrtel who has also been playing badly this season). Stop your Championship Manager nonsense, you can;t just look at a player in isolation and decide he's past it, you have to take account of the wider context against which his performances are set.
The fact that you think Babel "can just about play brilliantly for 15 to 20 minutes at a time" (15-20 seconds more like, he's hopeless and one goal against Lyon doesn't change that - have you not watched him play for the last two seasons or something?) but think that "N'gog" (it's Ngog, no apostrophe, at least spell our player's names right eh?) is "Div 2 material" speaks volumes about your football knowledge.
Ngog is 20, he cost £1.5m (as opposed to £11m for Babel)and if you can't see the way his game has improved from last season to this, there's no hope for you. He's already good enough for us to be certain of not making a loss if we sold him and the composure he showed when finishing the 1-on-1 against United, an opportunity that Babel would have likely put into the Stretford End, suggests that he's temperamentally ten times the player that Babel is already. If he keeps improving at his current rate, he could be a useful player for us and I'd play him before the hopeless
timsretreat - Sell the rubbish in the summer? You think Rafa will be allowed to keep the money raised from sales and spend it? Read what I typed below. Still think it's a good idea, especially when it's more difficult to sign quality players in te mid-season window? Want to go into the second half of the season with esentially the same squad as we have now but with three players missing, giving us even less cover when injuries hit.
As for Benitez being over-rated, you're off your head. We might be Liverpool FC but some of our fans need to wake up and smell the coffee - our sense of entitlement is ridiculous.
We have been going backwards relative to the other top clubs since 1991, a process exacerbated by the creation of the Premier league. United have more money than us because they had a ground capacity that was 10,000 more than anfield in 1994 and they've been expanding it ever since, they make roughly double what we do on every home gate, also they have ruthlessly exploited their club brand worldwide which is exactly the kind of thing that LFC fans criticise them for because it's seen as cheapening the club. We can't have it both ways, no-one is going to come along and give us a cheque for £100m because we're a nice traditional club.
Bentiez took charge after 15 years of failure interspered with the occasional success. Other than Houlier's cup treble in 2001, we'd won the odd league cup or FA cup in the previous 10 years and we won next to nothing after until Rafa came in. Since then we've got to two CL finals, won one, won the FA Cup and finished last season with our best points total since 1992 and were only fouir points away from winning it. If you think the manager that's achieved that is over-rated, you're a moron - considering the money available to Chelesea and united, it's a miracle that he's done what he has.
Comments 8, 9 and 10 - have you all been let out on day release from the same facility or something?
johnsack27 - What's Rafa supposed to say, that he knows full well the squad isn't strong enough but he hasn't been given the money he was promised to improve it? Again? I'm not even going to give the full breakdown of what happened with the transfer budget he was promised this season because I'm not sure you'd have the brains to do the maths and work out how much went missing, so I'll keep it simple. Rafa was promised £20m from the club out of the TV moneyt, some other money (the bit I'm not bothering to explain) AND WHATEVER HE MADE FROM SALES.
We sold a few players but to keep it simple, Alonso = £30m + £20m from TV = £50m. We spent £20m on Aquilani, £17m on Johnson and then Rafa had to beg the owners for £2m to sign Kyrgiakos, who we only bought because we needed another CB and he was all we could afford. Those three cost £39m, that's £11m less than the money promised from the club and Alonso's fee, without even including the rest of what we made from sales.
It was made clear to Benitez that a condition of signing his new contract was that the briefings to the press about the owners and the financial situation at the club were to stop, that's why he's toeing the party line, also what effect on squad morale would it have had if he's said we weren't good enough before the season even started? You think we'd have played better than we have? I'm surprised you've got the brains to switch a PC on, let alone type a comment.
johnsack27, hate to say it but I agree with you. Lucas is like 5hite. Carragher is way past his prime and because he knows it, he gets desperate in all his challenges - he'll be giving so many penalties away that the opposition team(s) will think that all their Christmas(es) have all come together. Babel can just about play brilliantly for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. N'gog? Spearing? Div 2 material.
The biggest problem is not when Gerrard and Torres get injured, its because there are too many ordinary players and not enough quality in the squad.
Sell the rubbish in January and concentrate on bringing in Top quality players, you only have to look at Chelski and Man Ure, as much as i hate to say it both squads are full of quality players.
Until the powers at the top see that Rafa is so over-rated and hasn't the ability to take this club to the top then i'm afraid Liverpool FC and all its devoted followers will have to put up with always being oh so rans.
said it b4 the season started that wen rafa said hes happy wit the the squad and hes puttin his faith in lucas that we r fu.ked..i hate been rite..i wish i was proved wrong but i wasnt..lucas is bloody 5hite..5 to 10 yard passin and lfc fans r sayin hes improvin..fu.k off all ye clown..lucas now and that long hair clown want 2 fu,k off..carra is passed it and that greece defender is shockin..season over in november..every 1 could c wat we needed but not rafa..i said we needed 2r3 top class players b4 season started r we would b lucky 2 finish in top 4 ...i so hate beein rite..lfc 4 life
