Moyes wants Old Firm in England

Sat, 07 Nov 14:49:47 2009

Everton boss David Moyes wants to see the Old Firm playing in the Barclays Premier League.

The Goodison Park chief, Scottish himself and a former Celtic player, sees many virtues in the two-tier Premier League that is reportedly set to be proposed to the football authorities south of the border.

And Moyes has no doubts the Glasgow giants would be a major boost to the English game, saying: "I'd like to see a two-tier Premier League because I am Scotsman; it would be great for everybody to see Celtic and Rangers initially in a Premier League Two."

He added: "I'm sure they would very quickly move into Premier League One. I feel it would be of great benefit for everybody.

"TV would be interested, the media would be interested and, undoubtedly, the support and crowds would increase at every ground in the country.

"Both Celtic and Rangers have as big a support than any team in England. From that point of view, it would help the game in England if we needed a boost in revenue.

"Maybe if crowds have dropped a little, or the TV revenue drops, this would be a way to address that situation.

"It would have a detrimental effect on the game in Scotland, but if there was the chance for the rest of the Scottish teams to maybe be in a play-off with an English team to Premier League Two, something like that would be workable.

"I would rather this than an Atlantic league, or some other European league. We have Welsh teams playing in English football so why not Scottish?

"The Scottish teams are really, really big clubs and I feel it would be good for everyone."

  2. This would kill Scottish football forever. Scottish football has been great, and might be again one day - Hibernian and Dundee Utd. are already showing signs. But without Rangers and Celtic paydays, Scottish football won't have the time to recover. I think this is a disgustingly insensitve idea, and I hope the Scottish Assembly will stop it if necessary..

  3. I've got a better idea. Moyes can take his team Everton and go play in the scottish prem with Gers and Celtic. Then the following season, Everton can fight it out in the scottish first division.
There's a reason Celtic and Gers have alot of support in Scotland...theres nobody else worth supporting.

  6. it'lll eventually come down to those greedy FU CKIN money grabbers that control the game now as to wether they join and we get 2 premier leagues, why can't they just FU CK off and leave the game alone!!! a big part of me wishes that footbal would financially fall on its arse so they'd all leave and it could get back to being about football and playing for your team not the one who'll pay the most money!!!! ALL YOU MONEY MEN IN FOOTBALL HAVE RUINED THE GAME GREEDY WAN KERS!!!!

they should stay in scotland, and i think they'll want to. lets face it they'd be out of champions league for good few years at least possible a decade till they catch up!!!! but is it not called the english premier league !!!! we should kick out the welsh teams instead of letting scottish teams in!!!! if the old firm leave the scottish league it will signal the end for their league football and automatic european place!!! GET RID OF THE WELSH AND LETS HAVE PROPER ENGLISH LEAGUE!!!!

  8. KNOW YOUR HISTORY.
    SCOTTISH FOOTBALL IS PRETTY POOR.PERIOD.
BUT WITHOUT THE SCOTTISH CONTRIBUTION TO THE ENGLISH GAME THE ENGLISH GAME WOULD HAVE BEEN PRETTY POOR TOO.
CONSIDER, NO KENNY DALGLEISH, NO SOUNESS, NO FERGIE, NO GEORGE GRAHAM, NO BREMNER, CERTAINLY NO DOMINANT LIVERPOOL IN THE 70'S AND 80'S.
REGARDLESS OF THE QUALITY...THE OLD FIRM GAME HAS AN AURA UNMATCHED ANYWHERE.PERIOD.
SO READ UP A BIT YOU BACKWARD SOUTHERN PEASANTS.
CELTIC AND RANGERS WILL STILL BE BRINGING 50000 + EVERY HOME GATE, WHEN MANY PREMIER LEAGUE CLUBS HAVE SHUT UP SHOP, REPORTED THEIR STAFF TO IMMIGRATION, AND MOVED TO THE 75 ALL SEATERS IN SOME PARKING LOT.

  12. you know what guys i think that the FA is @#$% scared of the old firm joining the epl because the old firm derby will become the biggest and most sought after game in the world on tv and eventually SKY are going demand that the old firm join the epl cause they call the shots and lets not forget that doesn't matter what the chairmen of the english clubs say because if SKY threaten to withdraw the monies and that alone is going to get the old firm into the epl and uefa will sanction that as well because of the amount of money that they put into the champions league.

  14. Once again I have to ask what about promotion and relegation? if the worse were to happen to Rangers or Celtic and they had to be relegated where would they go(and of course it could happen under present rules, though I don't say it would) which league would they be relegated to and what would the teams Scotish,Irish Welsh or English feel about a football club being imported into their league at the top, and from a league which they (the clubs already in that particular league)do not have access to, even if they are the champions of the paricular league. I suspect that the plan is too abandon the promotion and relegation system which would make a farce of the Premier League and reduce competion right down the English and Scotish System of leagues. To many changes have been made to the rules of our Game by people who think only of wealth and not the love of the sport! we should tell them to go to hell.

  15. Evan you numpty, If Rangers and Celtic joined, they would sit mid table. Everton, Aston Villa, Man City, Tottenham are all better and they aren't top 4 teams. Stop talking c.r.a.p. If the old firm were in any league other than Scotland, then they wouldn't be playing in european competition. Its a fact, Scotland gives two champions league spots for what purpose? Everyone knows that the same two teams are going to be there. Bump up the comp in Scotland before you even contemplate going to England, because there is no quality in Scotland at the moment (apart from Scotty McDonald, AUSTRALIA REPRESENT!)

  16. It's a pointless idea. English teams don't lose 4-1 at home to Sevilla and to Unirea Urziceni. I mean, Derby County wouldn't lose that badly to Unirea at home, and they are the worst team in the history of the Barclays Premier League. The old firm should stay in Scotland, that way they'll have a chance of winning trophies because their is absolutely no competition.

  18. 1ts true, the game is being ruined by "the money men"
ANY footballer, first of all loves the game, the competition and can admire his opponents skills.
To reach the level of being a pro takes great skill, dedication and love of the game.
    So.
I FIRMLY believe that any footballer would play for, say £5,000 a week maximum at the highest level if there was a maximum wage ( in fact there has to be now)
I myself played at "senior " level in scotland, in the "East of Scotland League"
AND PLAYED WITH GREAT PLAYERS, EX PROS, AND I MYSELF WOULD HAVE PLAYED FOR NOTHING ( IN FACT I DID ) EXPENSES ONLY WITH FERRANTI THISTLE. GREAT PLAYERS DESERVE GOOD WAGES BUT 3 5,00 OR SOME AGREED PAYMENT ROUND ABOUT THIS SUM SHOULD BE AGREED BY ALL

  20. How many more times? Welsh clubs within the English system are there through circumstance. A national Welsh league wasn't established until the 1990s, by which time clubs like Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham and Newport were historically established within the English league (they had the option to opt out, but chose not to because it would have meant financial suicide). Celtic and Rangers, on the other hand, play in an already established league.
Admitting Celtic and Rangers to the Premier, or English system per se, could also have implications for the national teams. Presumably the two clubs would claim as UK sides they are eligible to play in the English system, which in turn could open the debate about the need for independent home international sides when clubs are playing in a single system (a debate that we know several parties within FIFA and EUFA would very much like to hold).
And if Celtic and Rangers don't claim eligibility on such grounds, why then can't any club in the world (not to mention other Scottish clubs) apply to join the English system? (Maybe not as stupid as it sounds given the issue of the '39th game').
