Benitez 'positive' over Mascherano future

Mon, 07 Dec 22:01:51 2009

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has held "positive talks" with Javier Mascherano about the midfielder's future at the club.

Mascherano was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona this summer but Benitez insists the player is happy and negotiations are under way about extending his current deal, which runs for another two years.

"We were talking with him and his agent a month ago about our idea and his idea," Benitez told the club's official website, www.liverpoolfc.tv.

"He's doing really well and has come back to his best. We were really pleased to talk to him to make progress.

"We have plenty of time but we are happy with him and he is happier now, too.

"He has two more years on his contract; we were talking before and we will sit down sooner rather than later and talk about the future. The last conversations that we had were very positive."

Benitez is also hoping to tie up a new contract for goalkeeper Pepe Reina over the coming months.

"We are very happy with him," Benitez said. "He has been improving every single year and he will improve more because goalkeepers have more time in their career.

"He's always positive and he's one of the best in the training sessions because his attitude is always good. It depends on the agent and what the player wants but Pepe is very happy here in Liverpool so I don't see a big problem.

"The team-mates love him because he's a very good example."

  3. I think there may have been talks behind Benitez' back about HIS future. The man is a complete moron and has no idea whatsoever about the prem league. He is only interested in securing his own future with another club....
knowing full well that the chop is coming soon. Good riddance and take your comedy relief, Lucas, with you.

  5. hahaha...Liverpool are doom...overrated manager with overrated players hahaha...now all "Star" want to move to bigger club...the 3 people that i think deserve to be at Liverpool squad is only Torres, Gerrard and Reina...the others are totally @#$% and overrated...biggest mistake that stupid Rafa has done is selling Alonso and cant find the same type of player to replace him...what did he think?Aqualini for Alonso?totally different type of players

  6. Mascherano is gone in the summer. Liverpool won't be playing CL next season so why would he stay? Benitass will be fired by next January.

  7. the owners need to go, that much is certain. BUT. for all the talk of money matters and debts and not having the cash to add the depth needed, does anyone else notice how useless Rafa's expenditures are? we'll leave Keane of it for once, but Aquilani cost how much to just sit there? Mascherano only gets this kind of notice after you jettison another key player (Alonso)? maybe the problem isn't the cash after all, but how its being used.

  8. its just rubbish. Every penny from players sold is going to the yanks to cover their heavy debts instead of bringing new players for cover. God almighty save this football club

  10. Rafa's idea: OMG PLEASE STAY, OUR MID IS GARBAGE AND WITHOUT YOU WE CAN'T KEEP POSSESSION.

Mascherano's idea: Enjoy the injury break, see if the team can play without me and Torres in the lineup and stay top 4, compete in the Champions League, or win any trophy this season. Epic fail not even half-way through the season.
