LONDON (Reuters) - A controversial late goal by Salomon Kalou goal gave Chelsea a 2-1 home win over Newcastle United on Saturday to enable them to gain ground on leaders Manchester United, who went down 2-1 at West Ham United.
Kalou, looking clearly offside, struck three minutes from time for injury-hit Chelsea, while late goals from defenders Anton Ferdinand and Matthew Upson turned things round for West Ham after Cristiano Ronaldo had put the champions ahead and then missed a penalty at 1-0.
The game of the day was at White Hart Lane where Dimitar Berbatov scored four as Tottenham Hotspur beat Reading 6-4 with seven goals coming in a crazy 20-minute second-half spell.
United still lead the way on 45 points but Arsenal, on 44, can go above them if they win at Everton in Saturday's late game. Chelsea are third on 41.
