Derby are closing in on a deal for former Newcastle winger Laurent Robert as they step up their bid to avoid relegation from the top flight. The Premier League bottom club have announced they expect Robert to sign later on a free transfer on Tuesday.
The 32-year-old was without a club after being released by Spanish side Levante and he is set to pen a deal until the end of the season - subject to international clearance.
"His ability is unquestioned and I think he could be a really good bit of business for us," Jewell told the club's website.
"He hasn't cost us anything in terms of a transfer fee and we had the chance to take a good look at him in training before making a decision.
"Laurent's key quality is what he can do with the ball - he can unlock the door, make things happen and produce a bit of magic."
Jewell also seems unlikely to stop at his signing with a new goalkeeper in his sights due to injuries to Stephen Bywater and Lewis Price.
Jewell added: "We are looking for a goalkeeper and will hopefully complete a deal today or tomorrow."
