MK Dons won 5-4 on penalties against Gillingham in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Area semi-final after a 1-1 draw at Priestfield.Mark Stimson's men thought they had won it when Craig Stone netted with eight minutes to go but Dons striker Jemal Johnson broke Gills hearts equalising moments later.
And in the resulting shoot out after eight successful penalties, Cumbers sent his effort against the post and Drissa Diallo kept his nerve to take the League Two leaders through.
Paul Ince's men should have taken the lead after 31 minutes when Adam Bygrave scuffed into the path of Drewe Broughton but the striker somehow shot straight at Simon Royce.
The Gills stormed ahead after 82 minutes when Stone pounced on Nicky Southwall's corner and fired under Willy Gueret, but the lead was short-lived and Dons hit back almost immediately when Johnson broke down the right before his shot crept past Royce.
Diallo kept his nerve to win it for the Dons in the shoot-out after Luis Cumbers missed his spot-kick.
