Mariners win at Edgeley Park

Tue 08 Jan, 10:30 PM

Grimsby edge closer to Wembley after overcoming rivals Stockport 2-1 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Area semi-final at Edgeley Park.In blustery conditions, Jamie Clarke and Anthony Pilkington benefited from goalkeeping errors just after the hour.

But it was home skipper Michael Raynes who had the final word when he sliced Nick Hegarty's left-wing cross into his own net with 11 minutes left.

County striker Anthony Elding missed the game's best chance in the 41st minute, hitting the outside of the post from just six yards with Phil Barnes beaten.

Then, right on the hour, visiting defender Clarke unleashed a viscous 35-yard swerving drive which Conrad Logan could only parry into the right corner of his own net. The lead only lasted a minute courtesy of another goalkeeping howler, this time Barnes let Pilkington's low 20-yard shot through his grasp.

But the Raynes error in the end meant it was the visitors who will play in February's two-legged area final.
