The third round of the FA Cup served up four Premier League scalps as Everton, Birmingham, Blackburn and Bolton were all dumped out of the famous competition by lower league opposition.
And non-league side Havant and Waterlooville ensured a team from outside the Football League retained an interest in the competition on a thrilling day of football.
Everton's game with League One Oldham was delayed due to a chip shop fire outside Goodison Park, but it was inside the stadium where the real sparks flew as Gary MacDonald (pictured) struck on the stroke of half-time to send the Lancashire side into the fourth round.
Birmingham also fell to a League One outfit, goals from Huddersfield's Luke Beckett and Chris Brandon either side of Garry O'Connor's riposte at the Galpharm Stadium giving the Yorkshire side a famous victory.
Elsewhere, Championship side Coventry - inspired by two-goal striker Michael Mifsud - shocked Blackburn with a 4-1 away win at Ewood Park, while Sheffield United beat lacklustre Bolton 1-0 at the Reebok Stadium, David Carney netting the game's only goal.
In the battle of the billionaires in west London, holders Chelsea edged QPR thanks to Lee Cook's 28th minute own-goal, but were made to work hard for their victory.
Manchester United continued their 21-game unbeaten run over Aston Villa in the late kick-off. Two goals in the last ten minutes from Cristiano Ronaldo and substitute Wayne Rooney were enough to settle an uninspiring match at Villa Park.
Tottenham and Reading again shared a hatful of goals, Dimitar Berbatov netting twice - his fifth and sixth in two games against the Royals - and Stephen Hunt equalising twice for the visitors. Spurs ended the game - Juande Ramos' first experience of Cup football - with ten men after Tom Huddlestone received his marching orders late on.
Middlesbrough had to come from behind to see off the challenge of Bristol City, David Wheater netting the winner after Stuart Downing had cancelled out Liam Fontaine's opener.
Sunderland's poor season was compounded by a 3-0 defeat to Wigan, for who Paul Scharner and David Cotterill's were on target. A Paul McShane own-goal - sandwiched in between the Wigan players' efforts - completed the scoring at the Stadium of Light.
Portsmouth striker David Nugent's solitary strike at Portman Road was decisive against Ipswich, who were forced to play much of the game with ten men after Liam Trotter was sent off just before the half hour mark.
Rocky Baptiste's late strike gave non-league Havant and Waterlooville a well-deserved replay against Swansea in a 1-1 draw, while Bury earned a replay against Norwich with the same result at Carrow Road.
Earlier, lowly Chasetown of the eighth tier in English football had threatened to cause a massive upset at the Scholars Ground in Staffordshire after they took an early lead against Championship side Cardiff.
Cardiff's Kevin McNaughton put into his own net after just 17 minutes, only for Peter Whittingham to level just before half-time. 17-year-old Aaron Ramsey then put Cardiff ahead on the hour mark before Paul Parry finished neatly with just under 20 minutes remaining to seal the 3-1 victory.
