Australia clinch late victory

Eurosport - Thu, 08 Jan 11:11:00 2009

Australia salvaged a consolation win against South Africa after dismissing the tourists for 272 with only 10 balls remaining on the fifth day to clinch a 103-run victory in the third Test at the SCG.

South Africa entered the final day needing a further 314 runs to pull off an improbable win - and a series clean sweep - having progressed to 62 for one at stumps on day four.

But any hope of an unlikely victory disappeared when the tourists lost Neil McKenzie (27), Jacques Kallis (four) and Hashim Amla (59) in the opening session.

The hosts removed JP Duminy (16), Mark Boucher (four) and AB de Villiers (56) in the middle session to take control of proceedings to leave the Proteas on 193 for seven at tea.

Paul Harris (six) went lbw to Peter Siddle in the sixth over after the resumption to leave the South Africans 202 for eight but Dale Steyn and Makhaya Ntini held out for over 17 overs, adding another 50 runs before Steyn was removed lbw by Andrew McDonald for 28.

Graeme Smith had not played since retiring hurt with a broken finger and troublesome left elbow in the South African first innings but the skipper returned to courageously bat out the remaining overs with Ntini.

But with just 10 balls to spare, he was bowled by Mitchell Johnson for three.

Siddle was the pick of the Australian bowlers, taking three wickets for 54, while McDonald returned figures of two for 32.

South Africa had already clinched the three-match series after winning the first two Tests in Perth and Melbourne but Australia's victory meant that they retained their position at the top of the ICC's official Test rankings.

  2. Well well the aussies are beatable again, won't be long before we're back on top plus it's giving the rest of the test nations a voice to start talking which has been lacking for the last 10 years!!!!!!

  3. Outrageously poor umpiring only helped Aussies to scrape through and, had Graeme Smith been fit, South Africa might have even won the match. Aussies have nothing to rejoice but sit down and do some serious thinking as to how to manage the consequences of fading stars and how to shape up the handful of tyros.

  4. Poor old brainless, you really are a first class plonker, you really do have it in for the Aussies, did one of them bonk your mother, or perhaps your sister? not that I'm suggesting you were the outcome, may I suggest you leave that thing between your legs alone, we know it can send you blind, in your case that would probably be a big improvement, Ned Kelly

  5. To be fair I think we should have a 'be nice to the poms ' day, my suggestion would be the first of April, no particular reason, SA, well played, an excellent effort, you are now number three on the planet, after India, who are probably the main threat to Aussie dominance, at least the poms have moved in the right direction today with the dismissal of a captain who once again, misjudged the play, looking at the team it's difficult to see who will be the next captain, that big bloke from Lancashire might be alright, if you bring in 'prohibition! Ned Kelly

  6. brainless The attitude ur talking about is why the aussis are No1 in the world.

Maybee England should take it up (attitude) then maybe they could get a draw in WI lol?

  8. Well done SA on a sucessfull series win! OiOi Aussies put up a good fight in the final test and SA should not get ahead of its self just yet, they must remain level headed and respectfull and the no1 status should follow shortly. As for (ex) Captain Ego it seems his true nature has raised it ugly head again and the bubble has finally burst. This is probably why SA never picked Pieterson plus he cant field for toffee anyway

  9. Hmmm...so the aussies are heaped with congratulatory praise for winning the final test with 10 balls to spare against a team playing without a captain/player for most of the match and a team that had already wrapped up the series. Convincing? No...SA, at long last seem to have turned around the previously lacking mental phsycology and strength over the Aussies which was always a problem in the past in snatching defeat in the jaws of imminent victory. Well done SA - #1 ranking is just around the corner.

  10. Kallis fails again. Surely it's time to let someone else have a go while he tries to recapture some form with the bat...

  11. You are right quoling. Cricket is a completely different game and we must respect the spirit. Let's celebrate SA victory without disparaging the team that has given so wonderful moments of cricket over the past decade

  12. You English are all very quiet this morning.

Why would we be anything else?

a Aussie mate of mine told me this morning that in his view (an ex first class cricketer) the Aussies will not win the Ashes!

Those that understand cricket, enjoy the sport and don't use it to insult and throw racist remarks at other fans leave that to football fans.

  15. So South Africa has finally won a series in Oz - well done boys. I have huge respect for Aussie cricket and what they have done over the last decade - but the rebuilding excuse is not a valid one - test cricket is a measure of where the overall cricket standards of two countries sit at that point in time. And where it sits is that SA are on top having beaten Australia twice in their own back yard.
As for Kevin Pieterson - is anyone in England surprized that his huge ego has taken precidence over his adopted team - he deserted SA as a B team player because he couldnt get his way - good luck with him.

    From taylorelton7, on Wed 7 Jan 10:05AM
  16. Comments 2 & 4, couldn't agree more. Now that the Aussies are resorting to the "We're in a rebuilding phase" excuse, it's plain to see the mongrels are rattled.Looking forward to SA taking the No.1 spot next month, followed by further falls in the rankings for Australia and Ricky Ponting's subsequent 'retirement'.WELL DONE SOUTH AFRICA!!

    From Blighty4me, on Wed 7 Jan 9:47AM
  17. Good news Australia win the final test and keep their N0.1 status.

Now England can win the ashes in the summer and have the satisfaction of knocking them off the top spot.

From michael g, on Wed 7 Jan 9:44AM
  18. I would have thought you'd want the English to be quiet given you just lost a test series in your own back yard - I don't quite see how this article about the Aussie defeat is connected to the state of English cricket but let me excuse it by saying 'we are in a period of rebuilding'

    From leevincent1, on Wed 7 Jan 9:38AM
  19. Poor old 'brainless' feeling yourself this morning! a good series win by SA, we always know it will be a battle, unlike the poms, their captain has just resigned, another lack of judgement I expect, Aussies are rebuilding and whilst the ashes will always be good fun, one cannot see it of any great importance on the world cricketing stage, other counties such as India now set the standards, Ned Kelly

From jcastledineruiz, on Wed 7 Jan 9:19AM
  20. Well done SA, I wonder why the Aussies here use a test between Australia and SA as an occasion to bash England?
