Mark Selby answers your questions

World number four Mark Selby's answers questions set by you the readers in the comment section of his blog.

SNOOKER 2007-2008 Welsh Open Mark Selby O'Sullivan R. - Selby M. - 0

DM asked: 'Hi Mark, did you base your game on anyone while coming through the ranks at Leicester and Leeds?'

Mark Selby: I never based my style on any one player and I don't think that is the way to do things because everybody is different. You pick up little things from other players all the time but as snooker is an individual sport you have to do what feels comfortable and right for yourself - that's what snooker is all about.

rasermaus asked for some details about Mark's snooker academy in Leicester.

MS: Well, that is looked after in the main by my former coach Alan Perkins who used to travel around with me a lot when I was younger and helped me with my game. He organises the academy once or twice a month. The academy takes players of all standards but the numbers are limited.

hostage-of time asked about Jimmy White and whether or not Mark thinks he can return to the top 16.

MS: I think will be hard for him because he has slipped so far down the rankings but he is still definitely good enough to do it. He started coming back into form at the end of last season and has had some good results again this year.

Like many snooker fans, Jimmy was one of the players I watched on TV when I was younger and it would be great to see him back at the top level because he has so many fans who love to watch him play.

david h asked whether Mark thinks the days of a couple of players dominating at the top level will return.

MS: I think it will be very difficult for one or two players to win most or all of the tournaments simply because I think there are just so many great players out there at the moment. The top 16 in the world is always going to be full of quality but now you look at the qualifying stages for tournaments in Prestatyn and even there you will find a host of good players. I'm not saying that one player can't go on and dominate but it will be harder than ever for them to do it.

ceko0oo asked: What do you think was harder - winning the 2006 World Pool Championship or winning for example the Masters or the Welsh Open?

MS: They were both very difficult but I'd go for winning the Masters/Welsh Open simply because I feel snooker is a more complex and difficult game to play.

  1. What do you think about before you go out for a very important game? Do you focus on the play, or do you let your mind go and think of something else?

  3. Hi Mark, congratulations for your success in the Championship League! I would like to know something about the special relationship between a player and his cue. What makes it so important to always play with the same (your own) cue and why is the possibility of losing or breaking it so threatening?

  4. Hi Mark,
Obviously you have had success as both a snooker and 8-Ball player. Which game do you give precedent to? And which if any do you devote more time to when practicing?

Thanks very much and all the best for the rest of the season.

  5. Selbo,

I saw you play the Lincoln Exhibition matches and you were Mint - very funny, talented guy. Keep up the good work.
What do you try and focus on when the other player is at the table heavy scoring?
What keeps your spirits up to keep battling from behind like you have been known for doing?
    Regards,
