Pietersen and Moores pay price for spat

Eurosport - Thu, 08 Jan 11:15:00 2009

Andrew Strauss will take over as England cricket captain following the resignation of Kevin Pietersen, the ECB said.

Hugh Morris, after a day of intense speculation, also confirmed that team coach Peter Moores had been asked to "relinquish his role" after Pietersen's resignation, which followed a feud between the captain and coach.

"The ECB have accepted with regret the resignation of Kevin Pietersen as captain," he said, reading a statement at an emergency press conference at The Oval cricket ground in London.

But he added that Pietersen was "highly valued as a senior and experienced player and we are delighted that he has indicated that he is willing to remain part of the England team."

Pietersen, who like Strauss was born in South Africa, had questioned the ability of Moores - who never played international cricket himself - as a coach in a dispute which became public just weeks before England depart on January 21 for their tour of the West Indies.

The duo's dispute also threatened to cast a cloud over the team's build-up for this year's Ashes series at home to Australia.

Morris, who refused to take questions from reporters, said in his statement Pietersen "recognised that in the present situation it was impossible to restore the dressing room unity".

"I have an extremely high respect and regard for Kevin Pietersen but this has become an impossible situation given the irretrievable breakdown of the relationship between captain and coach."

Pietersen, only appointed captain in August and who led the team for just three Tests, said in his own statement issued earlier Wednesday: "I consider it would be extremely difficult for me to continue my current position with the England cricket team.

"Accordingly I have as of this afternoon decided to stand down as England captain with immediate effect."

However, he added: "Notwithstanding my resignation as England captain I fully intend to be part part of both England's Test and One-Day International squad to tour the West Indies next month, and to do all I can to recapture the Ashes during the summer.

"I'm extremely sad and disappointed to have to relinquish the captaincy at such an early stage especially in a crucial year for England cricket in such circumstances, and particularly when I feel that I have had much more to offer the England team as captain.

"However, this decision will not affect my determination to continue playing international cricket for England, doing all I can to win matches for the team and supporting whoever captains the team in the future," the 28-year-old star batsman insisted.

Strauss stood in as England captain in 2006 when Michael Vaughan was injured and led the side to a series win over Pakistan.

Morris added the board would announce their coaching set-up for the Caribbean tour "as soon as possible" and would then embark on an immediate search for a new permanent head coach.

Pietersen gave credence to longstanding rumours that his relationship with Moores was in trouble by telling Sunday's News of the World newspaper: "This situation is not healthy... Everybody has to have the same aims and pull in the same direction for the good of the England team."

Pietersen is currently on holiday in South Africa and not due back in England until Thursday.

Although well thought of by both the management and his colleagues, 31-year-old Strauss, unlike Pietersen, is not currently a member of the England one-day side.

Pietersen, who quit South Africa for England because he believed his progress was being blocked by racial quotas, was handed the England captaincy in August following Vaughan's tearful resignation.

His first match in full charge saw him score a century as England defeated South Africa in the final, 'dead rubber' Test at The Oval before overwhelming the Proteas 4-0 in the ensuing limited overs series.

Pietersen won widespread praise for persuading his teammates to resume their tour of India after the Mumbai terror attacks.

But on the field, England failed to defend a 387-run target during the first Test against India in Chennai.

Reports then emerged that Pietersen had been unhappy with the quality of the tactical input he had received from Moores, whom he had previously criticised for working the players too hard physically on last year's tour of New Zealand.

  2. i think the old codgers on the ECB should be the ones to resign KP was good for his team as a captain & for the game at least he encourages his team wether they are having a good day or not
And he says what he means its a pity others dont follow in his footsteps
He brings a bit of life to the game as does the team and what about getting rid of the old commentator who dosent realise Yorkshire where he was born is in England as he always gets excited about the foreign opposition doing well and please give the old codgers who are the umpires free vouchers for Spec Savers as the decisions they make sometimes are inexscusable

  3. To post 227 (walkingsex1), couldn't agree more. In the last couple of months 95% of my serious cricket posts have been rejected as invalid comment almost all of which contained nothing of offence save a little harmless humour. Yet if I were to turn into a foul mouthed brain void - no problem! As your demonstration clearly illustrates. It's quite a ludicrous situation no doubt designed to attract large numbers of one syllable mud and @#$% slingers and repel the lesser numbers of serious cricket commentators. Obvious why Thorpe's posts are accepted then....

  5. Point of reference Clive Britcher, i understand what you're trying to say, but actually the Ashes never leave this country!! Even when the Aussies win we let Ponting or whoever have photographs with the urn and maybe play with it for a bit, but ultimately they have to give it back before they fly home, or if in Oz, win or lose we take it home with us!!

The Ashes ALWAYS stay in the Trophy cabinet at Lords, we're just bad losers i guess...

  6. The only thing for Moores AND Pietersen to do know is to write formally to Her Majesty the Queen and apologise for their disgraceful behavious and then join the French Foreign Legion in the hope that they may regain their lost honour.
    Beefy for England coach!!!!

  7. On the news this morning KP arrives in Heathrow, gets ushered out through a back door with an armed police guard to a waiting car and refuses to answer any questions. Speaks volumes about the arrogance of the man. Why oh why couldn't all this be kept behing closed doors until a solution was found. Moores had to go so if he was sacked then Pietersen presumably would have stayed as captain and the ECB could have issued a statement simply saying that Moores had gone "under mutual agreement". As it is, they have yet again allowed English cricket become the laughing stock. As for Strauss for captain, you must be joking.

  8. Ok, Like 'flashewing' I'm a 60 year old fart who loves the game & have done for longer than I can remember.
This mess is not something that has just appeared, it's been brewing since Michael Vaughan resigned.
First Flintoff then Pietersen, two players with huge ability & egos to match. Why were the ECB surprised
this situation arose? How dare Pietersen challenge the ego of the ECB, it was aleays going to end in tears.
The ECB have to drag themselves into the 20th century (yes I know it's the 21st) & remove their blinkers.

  16. Once again, the elitist, Olde-School-Tie brigade from the ECB have destroyed a captain who might have made English cricket more aggressive, more popular and more competitive. But no - the boring old MCC farts rule - and the Indians, the Pakistanis, the West Indians and, most of all, the Ozzies, are laughing till their sides split!Who's the new captain? Another Olde-School-Tie who doesn't have the competitive edge to beat Zimbabwe. Oh, but as long as he's a jolly good chap, who cares, eh?
Pathetic, pathetic and even more pathetic. How in Heaven's name can you expect creativity, innovation, tenacity and competitiveness from people who think the sport is still a game for gentlemen?
I should imagine Ricky Ponting will not even bother bringing the Ashes over to England - fat chance of us winning them !

  20. I hate to see England cricket in so much turmoil, but something had to break. This is probably the best of all options. No one should be above the team or the game, and if someone threatens to quit, then let them. England is running out of time to save cricket. This will be a critical year for cricket. What will survive, Test, ODI or 20/20? I am hoping the ODI stays personally,(Test too long, 20/20 too short). Plus it keeps the World Cup format alive. There will be only one format winner in the future, as other sports have shown. The money is leaning toward 20/20, but will the tradition of Test be enough. A lot is riding on a competitive Ashes series.
