Sir Clive Woodward has called for his former Southampton colleague Harry Redknapp to be appointed as England's next manager.

Woodward, who guided England to the Rugby World Cup title in 2003, was employed by the Saints as their technical support director in 2005 when Redknapp was manager.

The current Tottenham boss has long been linked with replacing Fabio Capello when the Italian vacates his role after Euro 2012, and Woodward believes Redknapp would be the ideal candidate. He told the Independent on Sunday: "He's an Englishman who's proved himself and from what I saw of him, he's ideally suited."

He added: "I learned so much. The players respect him hugely.

"He has this incredible talent for spotting and grooming talent.

"I hope England do well in Euro 2012 with (Fabio) Capello but after that I'd like to see Harry in charge because he is a world-class coach."

  4. Clive Woodward should keep his bloody thoughts to himself. Harry is a well loved manager of Spurs, why would he want the poison chalice of manager of England? With all those egos in one team to contend with? He's better off where he is, especially with his health problems, why have the pressure of the England job, where past achievements are soon forgotten.

  5. Totally agree with sparrows post. It would indeed be a poisened chalice, and I think its got to the state where the FA are now clutching at straws. Yes Harry would be best for the job but as a Spurs fan would not like to see him go. If it was offered to him, I think it unlikely he would turn it down, but I'd like to see him finish on a high with Tottenham first.

  6. WOODWARD is obviously not as bright as he likes to think he is. Why would Harry want to abandon a potential CL club capable of challenging for PL for England where all he is going to get is stick. Spurs are probably a better team than England and Harry can't enter transfer Market to make them better. It's a poison chalice and Harry should follow Fergie's example and concentrate on making Spurs a top team. That would be a fantastic achievement and what is more it's feasible, whereas England winning the WC is not.
