LONDON (Reuters) - Ivory Coast forward Salomon Kalou was among the goals for Chelsea in one of many notable performances by African players in Europe at the weekend.
Kalou, returning to a heavily-revised Chelsea starting line-up in their FA Cup fifth round meeting with Huddersfield Town, scored the third goal in a 3-1 victory that carried the Premier League team through to the quarter-finals.
Kalou's goal came courtesy of a pass from England midfielder Frank Lampard who scored Chelsea's other two goals.
The Chelsea team included John Obi Mikel of Nigeria while Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien came on as a substitute for Lampard with 10 minutes remaining.
Chelsea's Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba was not included in the squad after returning from the Africa Nations Cup with a minor knee injury.
His compatriot Emmanuel Eboue was sent off as Arsenal crashed to a 4-0 defeat at Manchester United in another FA Cup tie.
Eboue was dismissed after 48 minutes for a foul on French left-back Patrice Evra, but by then Arsenal were already trailing 3-0.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger left his leading striker Emmanuel Adebayor of Togo on the bench until the second half and fielded a weakened team.
In Spain, African Footballer of the Year Frederic Kanoute netted in Sevilla's 4-2 win at Espanyol. The Mali striker struck after 11 minutes to make it 2-0 after Luis Fabiano's early strike.
In France, Nigerian defender Taye Taiwo and Senegalese forward Mamadou Niang both scored as in-form Olympique Marseille overcame Paris St Germain 2-1.
The win lifted the south-coast club up to fourth behind leaders Olympique Lyon, who are chasing a seventh straight title, Girondins Bordeaux and AS Nancy.
Lyon lost 1-0 at Le Mans, allowing Bordeaux, coached by former France defender Laurent Blanc, to reduce their lead to just one point with a 6-0 thrashing of Monaco.
All the goals came in the second half with Morocco striker Marouane Chamakh one of the scorers.
Algerian Djamel Belmadi shot Valenciennes ahead at Metz but his team were beaten 2-1 as the struggling hosts registered their second win of the season.
