6 Nations - Impressive Ireland down Les Bleus

Eurosport - Sun, 08 Feb 17:56:00 2009

Ireland ended a run of seven consecutive defeats to France with a thrilling 30-21 victory in their Six Nations opener in Dublin.

Jamie Heaslip - Ireland - 0

Brian O'Driscoll's side outscored Les Bleus by three converted tries to two in a quality game at Croke Park, with the Ireland skipper leading from the front and scoring their second touch down just after the restart.

Man-of-the-match Jamie Heaslip (pictured) completed a superb Ireland attack with a brilliant individual try five minutes before the break, while replacement Gordon D'Arcy, back in Ireland colours after a long injury layoff, added a third in the 66th minute.

France, whose dangerous back three ran the ball from deep at every opportunity, were the first to touch down through Imanol Harinordoquy and kept in touch on the scoreboard with a second by Maxime Medard in the 50th minute.

Ireland were good value for their win on what was coach Declan Kidney's Six Nations debut, but they were forced to fight all the way to avoid a repeat of their last-minute defeat to France in Dublin two years ago.

France fly-half Lionel Beauxis kicked a second drop goal soon after Medard's try to set up a thrilling last quarter and moved the visitors to within one score with his only penalty of the game in the 76th minute.

But from the restart, impressive Ireland wing Luke Fitzgerald tackled Cedric Heymans and when the replacement wing failed to release Ronan O'Gara re-established Ireland's two-score lead with his third penalty of the game.

Although O'Gara had given Ireland the lead with a second-minute penalty, France ran the home side ragged for periods of the opening quarter and looked set to run away with the game.

Marc Lievermont's side gained their due reward in the 14th minute when Harinordoquy was put in at the corner after a sweeping move that was typical of their play throughout.

Ireland struggled to get out of their own half in the first 20 minutes, but a move in the 34th minute involving full-back Rob Kearney and Fitzgerald finally gave them a good attacking position.

When the ball was recycled Heaslip ran a superb line in midfield and showed great pace and poise to beat the France defence before going over under the posts.

Beauxis kicked a drop goal on the stroke of half-time to cut Ireland's lead to 13-10 at the break, but O'Driscoll gave the home side the start they wanted to the second half when he burst clear of the France midfield and cut inside full-back Clement Poitrenaud for a superb score.

But again France responded. Harinordoquy claimed a kick ahead and broke into Ireland's half, the ball was recycled to Beauxis and the fly-half's cross-field kick was taken by Medard at full speed to go in at the corner.

Ireland led just 20-15 but when an O'Driscoll kick set up an attacking position in France's 22, Paul O'Connell won the lineout and after a series of pick and drives D'Arcy cut back inside and evaded the France defence to go over near the posts.

Beauxis and O'Gara swapped penalties in the last five minutes but Ireland held on to launch their 2009 Six Nations campaign in impressive style.

  1. Maybe Mr McD should get over the fact that Ireland and France provided a great game for the spectators and as for his comment re the ref. It a hard thankless job and comments like his are uncalled for and like the comment above demostrates all the try scorers were leinster player not munster so his cooments are just sour grapes and hot air

  2. Oh come on are some of you people serious about the referees??? Now i'm not saying that questionable decisions are not being made anymore because there will always be dodgey decisions made thats sport. However, I think that modern sport especially rugby is long long past any sort of bias from any referee let alone in a six nations tournament.............COME ONNNNN

  3. I'm french supporter and I was really interested to see your opinions in UK and Ireland about the match last saturday.
First of all I need to say that Ireland has a great team and during all the match they had their famous fighting spirit we are all afraid of. And we (french) need to recognise that our team was not in a very good day, and they had to fight a team more motivated...
But being french or ireland supporter, we also need to recognise honnestly that referee's job was really questionnable.
And because I'm REALLY CONVINCED THAT IRELAND HAS A GREAT TEAM, THEY DON'T NEED REFEREE SUPPORT TO WIN ! How do you think were our respective teams spirit after the match? Just have a look to O Driscoll comment (incredible player this guy!) or Dusautoir comment??? They all played rugby with absolutely no understanding about referee decisions!?!
And just let me add that during last year H-cup, M. OWENS refereed Munster in 1/4, 1/2 and finale of the competition! This not acceptable, he knows perfectly how munster men play and munster men know exactly how he applies the rules! How can IRB can let those kind of things appears?

  4. Re:Aurealix First of all anglosaxon has nothing to do with Ireland or Scotland. (saxon or sassenach means english) Secondly how can you believe referees favour the home nations over France. Ireland have only won the then 5 nations once a long time ago and Scotland don't fare much better. That was the first time Ireland have beaten France in 8 attempts. Why can't people just accept Ireland won in a very entertaining game, (unlike the England Italy game).

  5. I'm surprised to read what Mac Donald wrote. " France and England always have to face ill-refereing when playing celting nations." I'm French I have also the impression that the referees are often unfair to us ( example : H Cup- the referee refused Biarritz a drop after watching the video whereas the drop was ok ??? ), but I had never noticed that the English faced the same problem. Maybe I'm a little biaised... but it seems to me that the referee often "helps" the "Anglo-Saxons" ( for the 6 nations, the anglo saxons are everything which is not French and not Italian ).
Anyway I guess the Celts think that they always face ill-referee agaist England and Italy that they always face ill-referee against the others teams-who played the 5 nations...
But please stop telling " the only thing the French can do is complaining about referee " etc because it's such an easy way to avoid the debate !!
Congratulations to Ireland. Great game from the French, I believe in this team. Go France !!!!!!!!!

  7. only for the ref france wouldn't have had their first try.. only for a lucky bounce they wouldn't have had the second.. dont get me wrong they tried audacious back play, complemented by mauauding Harinordiquy & Chabal and deserved a bit of luck... BUT on the other hand all of Irelands tries involved a spread team effort.. 1. Kearney brilliant take and break, bowe in the perfect support position causes the panic before the ball is spread wide at pace including a class pass from POC eventually finished by an 8 with the turn of a centre and the battering ram of a tighthead.. 2. the lineout clean as a whistle, moved quickly again, ROG's pass was comparable to an alley-oop, and if you want someone to slam dunk then theres no better than a back on form o'Driscoll..and 3. the pack showing determination and endeavour after a great decision by the captain to put us in the corner (and a superb chase down by Heaslip on the kick), then as soon as the opportunity shows itself: proof that even the bench has a part to play, darcy showing upper & lower body strength together with jinky brilliance..

Kidney has given them the stability & platform for thich the talent can shine through!! What a game!

  15. Was at the game!! I personally think the best is yet to come from Ireland and France. Being a Munster man, I was somewhat annoyed by the amount of ball O'Leary wasted from the back of rucks. Granted this should be done sometimes, if Ireland are not moving forward, ball should be given to O'Gara and play his kicking game. I'm between two minds about Paddy Wallace starting at centre, granted he made some great tackles, he wasn't as much of a treat going forward as what D'Arcy was. Rob Kearney could have almost challenged Heaslip for man of the match!! Safe as a house under the high ball and was a treat going forward!! Drisco justified himself as captain as well.
