Unlike their cricketing cousins in the West Indies, England did at least have a victory to cheer after a flawed performance against Italy at Twickenham saw them win 36-11.
But Martin Johnson is acutely aware his side must make rapid and substantial improvements before they step into the hostile environs of the Millennium Stadium next Saturday if they are to avoid the kind of headlines that have greeted Andrew Strauss's team.
England's "collapso kings" were "humiliated" as they were bowled out for 51 and crumbled to a defeat in Jamaica by an innings and 23 runs.
England's rugby players were never in any danger of being picked off in the same way by an Italian side described by one wag at Twickenham as looking like a pub side in the first half and an old boys team in the second.
But Wales, the defending Grand Slam champions, will not be so forgiving in front of their own intimidating fans.
"Next week will be a step up in terms of a challenge," said Johnson.
"When you play Australia or South Africa or New Zealand at home it is one thing but you go into these passionate stadiums and it will be a test for us.
"Wales have a very good team and the crowd will be right behind them. They play some very good attacking rugby, they offload the ball and they have got pace and we need to be on top of that.
"The hostile atmosphere in Cardiff will be an acid test of the team and our rugby. The players have to approach it in the right way.
"If we can quieten the crowd and win the game it is one of those days you will remember for the rest of your career.
"It is nice to have a winning changing room again and the players should enjoy that - but we have to improve for next week. It gives us a lot to work on.
"We need to keep improving and accelerate that as quickly as we can."
England scored five tries but no-one leaving Twickenham on Saturday evening would have been fooled by the scoreline.
Andy Goode opened the scoring on his return to the side with a moment of magic inside two minutes but it was downhill for the Brive fly-half from there on.
Italy then gifted England two tries, for Harry Ellis and Riki Flutey, as Nick Mallett's experiment to use flanker Mauro Bergamasco to cover his scrum-half injury crisis backfired wildly.
Bergamasco finally received the shepherd's crook at half-time, by which point England were 22-6 ahead and the result was settled.
Italy were better in the second half with a genuine, if inexperienced scrum-half on the field, Australian-born Luke McLean at fly-half and captain Sergio Parisse the outstanding player on view.
The Azzuri even managed a consolation try for Mirco Bergamasco, whose quality is wasted on the wing, but not before Ellis had streaked clear for his second comeback try.
Mark Cueto rounded off an eye-catching individual performance with England's best try in the closing minutes but the muted response on the final whistle spoke volumes of the overall performance.
Johnson has fresh concerns over England's discipline, not just in conceding penalties, which they continue to do carelessly, but in sticking to the game plan - the same issues he complained about in the autumn.
James Haskell was sin-binned again for a trip on Gonzalo Garcia while Shane Geraghty was also despatched to the cooler for taking out McLean in the air.
"You have young guys playing a Test match and you say to them 'address your discipline' - but you have to hammer it in to them. They have got to understand that," said Johnson.
"James' trip was silly. Shane was just a bit over-eager in his tackle but discipline covers everything we are trying to do.
"There were a few too many occasions that players did things we had said not to do because it would get us in trouble and a few times we did go off script again, which cost us.
"That is pressure. Guys go back to type a little bit and we have to keep hammering at them."
Goode was recalled ahead of Danny Cipriani for the direction he could bring to England's game but he continually missed touch and the Welsh flyers Shane Williams and Lee Byrne would relish that kind of attacking ball next weekend.
With the ball in hand, England were turgid again and on Saturday's evidence would cause Shaun Edwards' blitz defence few concerns. England were crying out for a Cipriani or a Mathew Tait to break the game open. Ben Foden showed some exciting touches when he came on.
"It was nice to get a win at Twickenham but it was a start and that is all," said captain Steve Borthwick.
"The challenge now is we need to improve. We know Wales are a fantastic team and so we will have to perform very, very well."
Toby Flood will be available for selection again next weekend but Johnson was served an extra frustration when the England Saxons game against Ireland A was called off on Friday night, denying him the chance to assess Cipriani's form.

Could Englands visit to Cardiff become a modern "St Valentines day massacre" ????
england better shape up or they will get spanked
england rugby and cricket players are rubbish and should not get paid till they play better
I would love to be a fly on the wall when England coaching staff and players study the tape of Wales' opening game, in a bid to hatch some sort of game plan for saturdays trip to Cardiff. The expressions on their faces would be priceless, a blend of confusion, fear, along with a blankness confirming the inability to comprehend how to learn to play a sport in 6 days.
well surely if thats the case then funding towards traing and facilities to better the skill they already have is needed, the reason why countries like newzealand are so good at rugby is because the amount of money pumped into coaching youngsters to the highest level so when they become internationals they are the best they can be
The problem with any England sports team is that they are only consistent at losing. I reckon that if bookies would allow me to bet that any England team in any sport would lose, then I could show a healthy profit. It is high time that no sportsman or team should be allowed to wear the three lions, or have the word England or Britain emblazoned on their shirts or claim to represent this country unless they can prove that they have the skill, the talent and backbone to at least pose a threat to the opposition. With a few notable exceptions in athletics, cycling and rowing, and some of the more low profile sports, This country produces lamentably ill-prepared 3rd rate sportsmen and women. Either do it well or don't do it at all.
i think its about time to look at the game as brian ashdon did yes i understand that jonno doesnt want to be upstaged but ashdon gave power to senior players and as senior players they took responsibility on the pitch while the generals of ashdons era have gone catty robinson lawrence lewsy corry and with wilko injured there are few to stand and be counted but i feel senior players like easter vickery and even noon should grab hold of the young players and tell them what the rose on there chest actually means and its not something that boosts there wage packet the one sving grace i have is i remember 98 and getting hammered off the aussie when woodward first took over and believe jonno can too consistant selection is what he is looking for just gotta find the right men to do it
As a Taff I am finding the current state of English rugby a little amusing, we only have to look back at the tow decades of pain we have had with mini revivals along the way. I still don't believe England can be as bad as they are at the moment - I do believe that games will be raised, key players are the issue for England they seem to be lacking authority, cohesion and direction. Tindall I believe is a vastly overlooked, under rated and important player for England, adds a lot of experience and bite in the backs. As to the pack from 1 to 8 I would struggle to find one player who would make the lions first team nobody seems to be standing up to be counted, Sheridan traditionally would give steel to the front row but comment 9 is spot on had his head put firmly up his arse yesterday. Nick Kennedy had a reasonable game, NIck Easter? Haskell? Armitage possibly an acceptable debut. What has happened to the English pack? you'd think Jonno could install some bite and steel to the pack at least! However as I said being a taff no doubt England will raise there game against us- they will have to or it will be a hammering to remember
cant wait for Ireland , wales , France , Scotland to show them how rugby should be played a performance yesterday that a 3 team would have been unhappy with and Martin on his way out Johnson has nt a clue about coaching come on the boys in green
Goode's job isnt to score tries. he has to get the kicking spot on. if all he does for training is weight lift then he need a new position or a new game. england NEED a fly half that knows his job, and sticks to it!
All the old fogeys like Rob Andrew should get out of rugby. When they played, England were made to look third rate against southern hemisphere side. We need competent players and coaches who understand the modern game to be in charge of thingS without having their strings pulled by the "never won anything" brigade. Well, that's how I see it anyway.
I cant believe what I was watching yesterday,a international team playing a brand of rugby that you could see every week from junior rugby club 3rd team.I dont no what these players do in training but as Brian Moore said during the commentary they are spending to much time in the gym and not enough time with the rugby ball in there hands.Andrew Sheridan being prime example,he might well bench press the most in world rugby but he cant scrummage to save his life.He got well and truley beaten by a man who has not played any rugby for 8 months.Jono has got to get his head into this day and age and out of 2003 before he turns from hero to villian.
Thank goodness the Italian coach good it so wrong in the first half, otherwise England might have faced getting the wooden spoon in all 5 games. As it is, they must be odds on to end up in the bottom half of the results table at the end of the competition.
The Ireland / France match was a totally different class of rugby.
England were shocking......kicked way too much possession away, the scrum was impotent, the back row non existent, Goode was pedestrian and the backs were not given a chance. Ireland and France showed up England and I think the Welsh will be licking their lips after seeing that performance. We should have been more clinical and professional in putting Italy to the sword and I felt that playing 20 minutes with 14 men as Lawrence Dallaglio said on TV was unacceptable. I found myself willing on Italy to score as I felt that after the disastrous start they were trying to do 'something'.......I think this England side will be lucky to get thrid place in the 6 Nations.
I've watched English rugby for years and what I saw today was a bunch of unprofessional under performing second raters. If Johnson thought that Goode did 'pretty well' then it doesn't bode well for the future; the territory and possession stats show that all he (Goode)succeeded in doing was give the ball away. I fill sorry for the backs if that is the sort of rugby Johnson is going to make the team play. The French and the Irish were streets ahead.
mike_elder well said
Now he just needs to get rid of the dross players, cut out the persistent pointless fouling, impress on the team the need to play attractive rugby and then he can sort out those anonymous prats in the RFU, Rob Andrew included!!
