African Cup of Nations - Benin sack coach, staff and players

Eurosport - Mon, 08 Feb 15:14:00 2010

Benin have sacked the entire coaching and playing staff following their first-round exit from the African Cup of Nations.

2010 Benin goalkeeper Chitou Rachad - 0

The bizarre decision comes after the Squirrels finished third in Group C, behind eventual winners Egypt and semi-finalists Nigeria.

French coach Michel Dussuyer led the West African minnows to a draw against Mozambique, who they pipped to third on goal difference.

It was their joint-highest finish at the tournament, having previously qualified in 2004 and 2008 but failing to earn a point.

Their top players include Paris St Germain midfielder Stephane Sessegnon, Metz striker Razak Omotoyossi and Plymouth defender Reda Johnson.

The FA claimed a lack of patriotism and mass indiscipline led to the cull.

  1. How can anyone in their perfect senses agree with this decision??!... It's not down to any president of any country to interfere with the national team in such a way. That's the problem with African football/sports in general, business, well, societies: too much politicial intervention!! A president doesn't own the country, its FA, or national team players: people don't work for him! In fact, if anything, he's the one who should be working for his people! What a joke......

  2. For once, the president of Benin where the order to sack players, coach and staff came from had made history which is possibly what he's been looking for.Since he couldn't make a name to go down in history as a president.
He thought it a chance to do it now by having coach, staff and players SACKED which has never before done in the history of football.
Now, how does that clown expect Benin of all countries without a good record in African football history to make it through against a country like Nigeria that has made it several times to the world cup?
Besides,in a game, one has to be the loser. We all don't want to lose but when we do,it serves as a lesson for correction and for one to sit up.If the president cares that much, start training your boys now and make sure they have no time to party from now till the next African cup of nations and make sure you pay them a lot of money from now till that time if you want a change.Treat them like soldiers in a battle field who neither have access to their families or time to party and you'll get good results.C'est fini !

  5. This just remind me of Ivory team who did rubbish at one african cup of nations and the whole squad have been dragued to a military camp by then president General Robert Guey...

When will the politicians learn that they got nothing to do when it comes to football?

True the employer can sack the employees, but what is the point when we all know that iin Benin it is not easy to find a place to train on to play football? All my teen years back in cotonou i used to play football in the street and it is still same today.

The lazzy gov should invest in starting to put in place the basics needs to build a nation of young capable of playing rather than expecting more than the team can give.

I wont be surprise if someone use this as an opportunity during next election campaing

Finaly as i said before, sack the head of African FA Issa Ayatou for giving 2 years ban to Togo and also for letting Angola hosting the tournement in a country where you spend 3hrs in trafic and have to pay up to £400 for a night in hotel. The result was seen: How many people could attend the matches? Wake up African FA and stop planning this non event every 2 years but rather every 4 years.

  6. Reply 118 Ebu, you can't pick a national side to play for (once you have alread been capped at least). To be honest, I'm not sure how a player can be 'sacked' from an international position, 'dropped' or 'banned' maybe but sacked? This isn't club football.

I imagine many of the dropped players will be called up again when Benin realise the mistake they've made.

why are people complaining. part of their job description was for the players to play and win, and if they can't win they should be sacked. its as simple as that. afterrall they were paid before being sacked. if they are good, they should look for another team to play for. A good player will never lack a team.

  9. Various comments shown by differrent people show how unique each everyone is.some opinions says 'harsh decisions, stupid FA,etc.can i ask 'will employer continue to employ an employee who is disrectful and break rules all the time'.certain decisions have to be made in certain situations. Most of the so called Africa players who find themselves playing in Europe with lucrative contracts, have always been 'a pain in the neck' when it comes to showing respect and patriotism to their country and their FA who gave some the opportunity ot be where they are now.Take the issue of three (3) Ghanaian stars who pulled out of their national team, when they whole team was waiting for them at the airport en route to a friendly match in another country, with their mobil phones switched off and send some people to collect their passport on their behalves,'is this respect to the NATION AND FA' .The three(3) players saw themselves as 'stars' ,'DO THEY DO THIS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE CLUBS'?when such players gets sacked in the team,is it harsh?
Therefore, certain tough decisions has to be taken in certain situations.
    God bless Africa Football.

  10. By precisely the same logic the entire government should be dismissed for corruption and incompetence - but such a precedence would be dangerous wouldn't it? On the same principle, one would have to sack most of the governments in Africa - Hey! What a great trend. Maybe they are on to something after all!

  11. The actions of Africans sometimes prove our level of naivity, affixated short-sightedness and lack of rational sensibility. These actions can only hamper sustenance, continuity and progress. Rash and harsh decisions are detrimental, rather diplomacy should be employed in critical issues like this.

I wish we could just sack Benin governement and all the bunch of crap so called politicians doing Feck off for that country.

As a Benin Born, i was at least glad to see them play at that rubbish African killing Cup of Nations. This is just a farce. What will usless Issa Ayatou decide now? Ban Benin for 2 African Cup of nations due to the gov interferances as he did for Togo? Fifa should get rid of him .

Good or bad decision, at least that give chance to talk about Benin since they cant win.

  15. The referee was really impartial..... not in Algeria 0 (three red cards) Egypt 4 (illegally taken stutter in the penalty). The African Cup of Nations was such a disgrace - the whole tournament. Benin are well rid of international football. If the Federation (based in Egypt always, by the way.... say no more) are punishing Togo for quitting understandably from the next two finals, that tells you everything. No point holding the next tournament. Just present Egypt with the trophy again, to save all of the trouble. By the way, I am white, British and don't support any African team. I'm an England follower. I just like fair play and justice, whoever is playing - including my own team. I can't stand the non-stop biased officiating we see so often nowadays.

  18. this is why no african team has won the world cup yet, whenever an africa nation does badllly the country sacks its manager, then everyone else, i tell you now, if temas like togo, nigeria, cameroon, angola, eygpt, ghan and ivory coast had more routine and support and the same coachin staff for a long time then one of them would win the world cup.look at the teams who have won wthe world cup over the last 30 y years..they all ahve had experoance of winnning big if it be players or coahes that were players who won the cup...experiance and knowloedge are pricelss....
