The Dugout - 60 seconds with Avram Grant
The former West Ham and Chelsea boss reveals which legendary Hollywood star he would want to play him on the silver screen.
If you hadn't been a football manager, what career would you have had instead?
A football player! I don't know, life takes you to places that you don't think about. When I was a child I wanted to be a football player and then I wanted to be something else, and then I became a coach and a manager. There are many other things that interested me but I am in a job that I like.
What was your first car?
My first car was an Austin Morris. I remember having the car as a student, and having problems with it on cold days in Israel. I have fond memories of it. I remember one time the brakes didn't work, and we were on the way to university. It was very frightening. But it was a car my parents bought me. It was nice at the time.
What is your favourite song?
I have two favourite songs. One is 'Imagine' by John Lennon. I think the words mean a lot to me, and also 'My Way' by Frank Sinatra which is a great song, but also good for these times.
What is your favourite TV programme?
I like documentaries and movies, but I like to see a good documentary about things I didn't know about. This is always very interesting to me.
If someone made a film of your life, which actor would you like to play you?
This is a tough question to answer, but my favourite actor would be Clint Eastwood. I like Clint Eastwood because he has a great passion as a director as well as acting. He is 80 years old, and has a great passion for what he does. I recently saw a documentary about him which was very interesting because of his passion for acting and directing.
What is your favourite holiday destination?
I definitely like Africa. You can still see the nature there, and when I come to Africa it is something different. I like it very much. You see things like the world many years ago. It is very nice to see Africa as I am sure in some places it is the same as it was 50 years ago, in a good way.
If you could throw a dinner party for some guests from any period in time, dead or alive, who would they be?
If you are talking about the old, old days then I think the first person would be Moses - I think it would be very interesting. The second one would be Mahatma Gandhi and the third one, which is my favourite, is Anwar El Sadat, the Egyptian president who made peace possible between Israel and Egypt; I think if there were more people in the world like him it would be a better place.
There was a lot of unrest between Israel and Egypt, big wars - not one, not two - many wars, many people died and no one believed in peace. There was no connection between the two countries and this President came and he said 'I am ready to go to Israel'. I remember I was 22 at this time, I remember nobody believed that this enemy who killed a lot of our people can come to Israel. But he came to Israel and the President said 'the flight from Egypt to Israel is less than an hour but you have crossed now many, many hundreds of years'. For me he is the favourite. To do things like this you need a lot of courage, a lot of vision. I will never forget it.
What would you cook for them?
Israeli hummus. To be fair they will not eat what I cook, I am not good at this!
What is your favourite sport apart from football?
Basketball, but I like every sport because in sport you have to push yourself all the time and I like to see every competition. I think with basketball and tennis you enjoy the game but you also see character and other things. I saw the final between Djokovic and Nadal at the Australian Open and it was amazing. Six hours and I am sure that everyone who saw the game from the first minute did not leave it. It was a great match.
Crystal ball time – what do you think you will be doing in the future, will you be coming back to England?
I love England very much and from the football side there is no doubt that it is the best in the world. Here in Belgrade they always like to hear what is in England and I think it is the only league in the world where you can find 20-25,000 people at a game in the second division. People are so passionate about football and for me it is the best place in the world for football.
