Wembley Return On Rovers' Minds

Sat 08 Mar, 08:09 AM

Bristol Rovers boss Paul Trollope is plotting a fairytale return to the scene of his greatest triumph as he prepares for Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final home tie against West Brom.

The winners of the Memorial Stadium showdown will earn a semi-final clash at Wembley - where Rovers beat Shrewsbury 3-1 in last season's Coca-Cola League Two play-off final.

Rovers are dreaming of another trip to the national stadium for what would be the club's first-ever FA Cup semi-final.

"It would be a massive achievement to go back to Wembley and get to the semi-final for the first time in the club's history," said Trollope.

"To get back to Wembley would be great for the whole of the club.

"There has been a lot of talk about it in the city of Bristol - at least in the blue-and-white half - and around the club, but within our group we have got to remain focused.

"That has been our strength so far behind our success.

"We just think about what is required to win the game and not about what the consequences might be should we win the game."

Wembley will host both FA Cup semi-finals, following the completion of the new stadium last year.

Rovers were backed by around 40,000 fans when they beat Shrewsbury there last year.

The Football Association have come under fire for using Wembley to host the semi-finals amid suggestions that it devalues the final itself.

Trollope said: "If you had said that to me two months ago, I would have said I think it does devalue the competition - because I think the FA Cup final at Wembley is a very special day and a very special occasion.

"I remember they played both semi-finals at Wembley in the early-1990s, and it didn't seem right.

"But we are a League One side, and these kind of opportunities do not come round very often for players at our level - so if we do get there then I will be very, very happy to take it."
