Darren Ferguson's Peterborough reclaimed the League Two top spot from Paul Ince's MK Dons after a 3-2 win at Dagenham, while Mansfield's boss Billy Dearden has quit after a heavy home defeat to Rochdale.
The struggling Stags remain in big trouble just one place off the bottom of the Football League - and Dearden and Mansfield were officially parting company within minutes of the final whistle at Field Mill.
Gary Jones (27 and 55), Adam Le Fondre (47) and Rene Howe (67) were the goalscorers who helped to end Dearden's tenure.
At the less stressful end of the table, Peterborough's 3-2 win at Dagenham & Redbridge took them back above Milton Keynes Dons to lead the division.
Posh were always in the driving seat, with goals from George Boyd (57) and Craig Mackail-Smith (73) putting them two up.
A David Rainford penalty made it interesting seven minutes from time. But Posh re-established their two-goal cushion via Aaron McLean (86).
Ryan Hall's last-minute goal was therefore of the consolation variety for the hosts.
Hereford were on the scoresheet either side of half-time - thanks to Gary Hooper and then an own goal from Mark Roberts - in a 2-0 win at Accrington which kept them fourth and up to within a point of Darlington.
The Quakers lost ground in the race for automatic promotion, losing 2-0 to play-off hopefuls Wycombe at Adams Park - where the Blues' goals came from Leon Knight (24) and Scott McGleish (84).
Brentford had to wait until the last minute before Glenn Poole proved their superiority over relegation candidates Macclesfield with the only goal of the game at Griffin Park.
Bury, meanwhile, had things wrapped up much sooner at home to Morecambe - thanks to two goals from striker Andy Bishop either side of the break.
Stuart Drummond got one back in the 53rd minute, but that was as good as it got for Sammy McIlroy's short-haul travellers.
It was a goalless stalemate between strugglers Notts County and Barnet at Meadow Lane.
There was a little more to shout about at Shrewsbury, though, Ben Davies' 43rd-minute equaliser earning the hosts a 1-1 draw - after Pablo Mills had put Rotherham fleetingly in front.
Stockport leapfrogged Rotherham into a play-off place with a 2-1 win at home to Bradford.
Defender Michael Rose grabbed the Hatters' 79th-minute winner, completing their comeback - after veteran striker Peter Thorne (53) had put the Bantams in front with a penalty and Anthony Pilkington (69) equalised.
