Bernard breaks 100 freestyle world record

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands (Reuters) - Alain Bernard of France broke the men's 100 metres freestyle world record at the European swimming championships on Friday.

Bernard clocked 47.60 seconds to beat the mark set by Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands at the Sydney Olympics on September 19, 2000.
