Maguire Shooting For Starting Spot

Tue 08 Apr, 08:09 AM

Aberdeen striker Chris Maguire hopes his decisive double against Falkirk has earned him a starting spot at Hampden on Saturday.

Maguire scored both Aberdeen goals in the crucial 2-1 victory, which leapfrogged the Dons over their opponents into sixth spot in the standings.

With the table split in two, Aberdeen are guaranteed to finish in the top half, as Falkirk will end their season by playing against the five other sides in the lower reaches of the division.

For Aberdeen the stakes remain high and they are now gearing up for a Scottish Cup semi-final against Queen Of The South.

Maguire believes his brace has given him every chance of being chosen by manager Jimmy Calderwood to play up front at the national stadium.

He said: "It is up to the manager who he picks but I think I have done well in scoring two goals. I think it would be hard for him to drop me.

"But it is up to him on the day and whatever he thinks is best for the team."

Maguire opened the scoring against Falkirk in the 21st minute when he nodded in from close range after Zander Diamond had flicked on a long Scott Severin throw-in.

Carl Finnigan equalised early in the second half as Derek Soutar's blunder in failing to hold on to Scott Arfield's driven cross allowed the Englishman to pounce.

But Maguire notched the winner after Sone Aluko just managed to keep the ball in play, before clipping a cross back to the teenage striker, who slid the ball into the net from an extremely acute angle.

Maguire also scored the final goal in Aberdeen's last-gasp 4-3 victory over Inverness which set up the make-or-break game with Falkirk and the Bellshill native is more than pleased at his current form.

He said: "Things are falling nicely into place for me and I am delighted with that. As each game goes past I feel more confident.

"You just have to get games under your belt. I am on a run just now and I can't stop scoring."

Falkirk manager John Hughes apologised to the club's fans after failing to qualify for the top six at the final hurdle.

He said: "If I have got an apology to make it would have to be to the supporters.

"I am just sorry we never got them there, but it is not for the want of having a go."
