Xavier Carter is planning to run the 100m and 200m at the US Olympic trials.
Carter, who ran the third quickest 200m of all-time in Lausanne two years ago, has ruled out the one-lap race in Beijing because of the schedule.
"The 200m and 400m combination at the Olympic Games is impossible, that means I will not try it at our trials," he was quoted.
Carter made history in winning four titles at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championships - the first man to do so since Jesse Owens.
