Int Football - Carson sets sights on World Cup

Eurosport - Wed, 08 Apr 10:30:00 2009

West Brom goalkeeper Scott Carson is happy with his form this season and hopes it will earn him a place at the World Cup if he can keep it up.

FOOTBALL Scott Carson England - 0

West Brom look set for a quick-fire return to the Championship after nearly three months without a Premier League win and Carson has been at fault for a number of goals this season, including the first against Stoke.

He was not named in Fabio Capello's squad for the recent double-header with Slovakia and Ukraine, but the former Liverpool stopper believes he can re-establish himself if he maintains his form.

Carson said: "David James is pretty much set at number one at the moment with England but there are probably half a dozen other 'keepers who could get the other two places in the squad so it's going to be difficult for any of us.

"But, as long as you play every week, you will give yourself a chance," he added.

"I think I've done okay this season but, the more games you get under your belt, the more consistency I can bring to my game.

"Mr Capello is going to be looking for 'keepers he can trust if we get to South Africa so I've got to try and make sure that I do a good job here at West Brom.

"If I do that, it's good for Albion - and hopefully it will give me a chance to get into the squad."

Carson is still only 23 despite spells already in his career with Leeds and Liverpool and loan stints at Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton and Aston Villa before his permanent switch to The Hawthorns last summer.

And he is quick to praise the part played in his development by the Baggies goalkeeping coach and former England player Joe Corrigan.

Carson said: "Joe Corrigan is a great coach to be working with. He works you really hard but has always got interesting things to say and different little things to try out.

"He had a great career as a player, he played at the highest level. He has worked with some top goalkeepers since he packed in playing and you can't fail to learn from him."

  2. tildesleym: Do you go to the matches? Do you cheer the team on or slag them off all game, if you go?

My point is, Carson is not a bad keeper. He has not been at fault for 57 goals this season you muppet!

He is not an England contender, there are better keepers than him around, but in a good team, with more confidence, I'm sure he will come good. He's only 23 and has 15 years of football in front of him as a keeper. Plenty of time to mature. In the meantime try supporting YOUR team!

  9. Carson has kept us in loads of games this season. He is not a bad keeper. He has made mistakes, but so have other keepers and yet they are not harrased all the time about them. In fact Englands No.1 is Calamity James as they used to call him! Carson has had awful cover in front of him this season and he has no confidence in his defence. The mistakes he has made, well you can count them on one hand. How many mistakes have Zuiverloon, Robinson, Meite and Barnett made this season? I rest my case.

  10. Now i have heard it all Alan, Carson for England this guy thinks his form is fine he needs to be tested for drugs he has the worst record in the Premier league, i agree with the other 30,000 fans who think he and Clueless Mowbray are F#CKING rubbish how can he have the balls to play like he did last week and come out with a statement like that, the problem is Jacobite Mowbray has told them all they are great and they actually believe him, like i said the other day the only person in England more clueless than Mowbray and now obviously Carson is GORDON BROWN, "UP THE BAGGIES"

From wayne, on Wed 8 Apr 12:45PM
  13. If Carson thinks his form this year has been OK he should be forced to watch the videos of all the games he has played in this season so he can see the level of his incompetance. Although the defence this year has been inept he has played a major part in the teams poor performances. He should not be considered for the England team until his own form improves significantly
