Marseille want to open talks with full-back Tyrone Mears after his impressive run in the team led to interest from other clubs.

Mears, 26, joined l'OM on loan from Derby after the English club was relegated to the Championship.

While he initially struggled to break into the first team, he took advantage of an injury to Jerome Bonnart and is now first-choice right-back for their Ligue 1 title push.

"Tyrone has been outstanding for Marseille since he got in the team and they have expressed an interest in signing him on a permanent basis," Mears's agent Willie McKay told Sky Sports.

"Marseille are hoping to sit down with Tyrone later this month to hold talks and Tyrone really loves playing for such a big club as Marseille.

"But there is a lot of interest in Tyrone with three other teams in France watching him, as well as one Premier League club, two Spanish clubs and one Italian side all tracking him.

"Tyrone had an unlucky start at Marseille when he joined because of injury, but he kept working hard and he has kicked on now and he is getting his rewards in the side."

Former West Ham and Preston defender Mears caused controversy when he left the Rams for a trial at Marseille without the permission of then-boss Paul Jewell.

He made headlines last month when he scored the winning, extra-time goal in the UEFA Cup last-16 victory over Ajax.

Mears would cost around £1.5 million.
