Lions 2009 - Lions Watch

There was much for Lions selectors to savour at the weekend as Munster downed Leinster, and Leicester and Harlequins continued their march towards the Guinness Premiership playoffs.

Nick Easter - Harlequins - 0

Munster earned Irish bragging rights after completing the double over their arch rivals with a 22-5 win at Thomond Park, a victory that sets them up nicely for Sunday's Heineken Cup quarter-final with the Ospreys.

Premiership leaders Leicester and second-placed Harlequins also feature in the Heineken Cup and will take heart from decent wins over Sale and Bath respectively.

The Tigers coped superbly with the sending off of Julian White to down the Sharks 38-31 at Welford Road, while Harlequins produced one of the Premiership's great defensive efforts to grind out a 19-3 win at The Rec.

The Good

Nick Easter (Harlequins)

The England international (pictured) may not fit the profile of a classic number eight, but he was in magnificent form as he captained Quins to victory over Bath. Easter is a smart footballer, a strong carrier and a constant thorn in the side of the opposition. He may not be the quickest around the park, but there is something a bit different about Easter's game that could fit nicely into Ian McGeechan's plans.

Ronan O'Gara (Munster)

The Ireland fly-half continued his Grand Slam form with a man-of-the-match performance in Munster's win over Leinster, in which he landed three penalties and a drop goal. O'Gara looks a shoe-in for one of the fly-half spots.

Sam Vesty (Leicester)

Vesty was at his very best as 14-man Leicester picked up a bonus point in their victory over Sale. Scored one of the Tigers' five tries and again proved his versatility by moving from centre to fly-half when Toby Flood was off for blood repairs. Vesty was key to Leicester maintaining their play-off push in the absence of star players during the Six Nations. Has yet to earn a senior England cap but his versatility makes him hard to ignore.

Ugo Monye (Harlequins)

The flying wing had little to do in attack, but gave further evidence of his defensive skills with a number of crucial interventions that prevented guilt-edged scoring chances for Bath. With a decent enough kicking game, Monye is fast becoming the all-round package and will surely be in the running for one of the four wing berths.

The not so good

Jonny Wilkinson (Newcastle)

Time is fast running out for the England international as he was again absent from Newcastle's team list for their Guinness Premiership trip to Wasps. The Falcons have just two games left before the Lions' April 21 squad announcement and the World Cup winning fly-half will have to play both to maintain his very slim chances of making the tour.

Lee Mears (Bath)

Fears that Mears's lack of size could be exposed in South Africa were given credence in the defeat to Quins as he came off second best against opposite number and former Springbok Gary Botha. The Bath front row was taken to the cleaners by Botha and outstanding props Ceri Jones and Mike Ross, and Mears was unable to make an impact with his running and off-loading.

  1. For all those reading and adding their biased national perspective on who should go, the things to remember are that -
The Irish players of note should be first in the squad - they one the 6 nations and looked the most composed under pressure.
The Welsh are second and their players of note should also be put straight on the plane
The English only won games against off form or disorganised teams in the 6 nations and were very poor under pressure from better teams. Any Englishmen selected will have to prove that they can take serious pressure from an aggressive South African team. In my humble opinion there aren't even a handful.
The Scots will have to prove even more to the selectors. (I am a Scot so no abuse please) There may only be room for a couple of Scots on the plane because despite the promise and latent talent nothing has been proven in the last 4 seasons.

This will be a very tough tour and there is no room for national politics. So McGeechan has a duty to pick only those players that can play under BOD, who is the rightful captain of the tour and those players who can live with the relentless pressure that the Boks will put the teams under during the week and in the tests. So that is why both England and Scotland should not expect to have much presence in the squad. They just aren't good enough.

  3. Orange2tuf - get the sack of spuds off your shoulder, your racist rants just serve to mark you out as the narrow minded halfwit you obviously are. Talk rugby or bugger off please.
It makes me very sad to say there will be precious few englishmen on that plane but if there is any justice Worsley, Armitage and Flood will be.
    Come on you Lions!

  4. run along orange2tuf who do u surpose would be better floods a much better runner and tackler than ogara lets be frank if it wernt for his tacticle kicking he wouldnt be in the irish squad and stephen jones as honest a player as he is and u cant doubt his hard work doesnt offer much game breaking specialties thats why warren gatlan keeps trying to bring hook in

  5. Take 3 stand-offs--- O'Gara, Jones and the outsider who will end up being the Lions 1st choice...???? he plays for the Ospreys.

  7. i totally agree with you all wilko doesnt have any right to be on that plane if he doesnt play but he is the one fly half i would think could play southafrica out of the game form is temporary but class is perminent and i dont think that o garas predictable kicking game or stephen jones thinking hes a 16 stone crash ball centre game is gonna get the lions a tour victory we need a quick thinking flyhalf who can deal with the rush deffence and after the game with france i would go with toby flood

    From p.lloyd142, on Wed 8 Apr 8:56AM
  11. And Nick Easter. No way. Too many good Irish and Welsh back row ahead of him. If I had ro have an English back row in the squad it would be Worsley, vast experience and a really impressive impact in the 6 Nations.

From geraldpatrickbyrne, on Wed 8 Apr 6:37AM
  12. Why is there constant talk about Sam Vesty. If he wasn't good enough for England then why would he be picked for the Lions. Also whoever writes these reports, please stop suggesting Wilko, great player, in fact one of the greatest, but that was six years ago. It's a shame he's been injured for so long but he has and thats that.

From geraldpatrickbyrne, on Wed 8 Apr 6:33AM
  13. oh, and if wilkinson were picked I would genuinely fear for his safety on the hard velte grounds with the sundry monster back rows trying to drive his career six feet under in the tackle

  14. "any other brits" eh? the welsh and scots are also "brits" ... freakin ignoramus ...

From john, on Wed 8 Apr 1:06AM
  15. have to agree. beyond croft, flutey and maybe armitage i don't see any other brits worthy of a place. 'Glass jaw' Sheridan went down a notch in my book due to his glass jawdness and unsporting behaviour at the weekend. Nick Easter is another who hasn't a chance of going. Heaslip, Jones, Leamy even Powell is ahead of him.

  16. Is this piece english loaded? You must be having a laugh at some of the comments made above, everybody knows that there will be 30 players from Ireland and Wales. The english and Scots will make up the back up squad probably bringing on the water lol.
