The Masters - Countdown: Surprise packages

Eurosport - Wed, 08 Apr 11:37:00 2009

Eurosport-Yahoo!'s Will Tidey highlights five players capable of springing a surprise at the Masters.

Nick Watney hits a driver off the 18th hole while n his way to winning the Buick Invitation golf tournament in San Diego - 0

NICK WATNEY

World ranking: 35

Majors won: None

Watney has been very impressive on the US Tour this season, finishing inside the top 25 in seven of his eight tournaments and winning the Buick Invitational against a stellar field. The American made his debut at the Masters last year and came in T11, recovering from an opening 75 to finish on even par.

JEEV MILKA SINGH

World ranking: 31

Majors won: None

Singh became the first Indian to compete at the Masters in 2007 and will ahead to Augusta this year with confidence soaring after a top-five against the world's best at the WGC-CA Championship. The reigning Asian Tour champion, Singh came in T25 last time out at the Masters and bettered that with a ninth-placed finish at the US PGA Championship in August.

RORY MCILROY

World ranking: 17

Majors won: None

If McIlroy wins at Augusta he will take Tiger Woods's record as the youngest winner of the Masters and send his rising star into the stratosphere. The 19-year-old Northern Irishman has the all-round game, he has the confidence, but it's yet to be seen how he will react in the heat of a Sunday afternoon down the stretch at a Major.

RETIEF GOOSEN

World ranking: 21

Majors won: Two (US Open-2002, 2005)

Goosen has a remarkable record at Augusta. The 40-year-old has finished inside the top three on four occasions and not missed a cut since 2001. Add into the mix his victory at the Transitions Championship last month and there is good reason to suspect the Goose, and not Ernie Els, will provide the South African challenge this time round.

LUKE DONALD

World ranking: 34

Majors won: None

The Englishman spends most of his time on the US Tour these days and has started the year in fine form - finishing inside the top 25 at all six events he's played. He might have missed the cut at Augusta last time out, but Donald is at the top of his game and if his troublesome wrists hold, he could even better his T3 finish in 2005.
