BARCELONA (Reuters) - Paul Scholes joined the Champions League century club on Wednesday when he made his 100th appearance in the competition for Manchester United in the semi-final, first leg against Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
His century, which does not include matches in the qualifying round, comes 14 years after his first appearance also against Barcelona, in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford in October 1994.
Scholes, 33, becomes only the ninth player to make 100 appearances in the competition proper, according to official figures issued by UEFA, European soccer's governing body.
He has scored 20 goals.
Scholes's United midfield partner Ryan Giggs made his 100th Champions League appearance against Olympique Lyon last month and made his 102nd appearance when he came on as a substitute against Barca. United club captain Gary Neville has made 99 appearances for United in the competition proper.
The other seven players to make 100 appearances in the competition are Raul (116), Roberto Carlos (114), Paolo Maldini (109), Oliver Kahn (103), David Beckham (103), Clarence Seedorf (101) and Luis Figo (100). Maldini holds the record for all European club competitions with 172 appearances.
