Wolfsburg want Zaccardo for Europe

Thu 08 May, 10:00 AM

After moving closer to securing European football on Wednesday, Wolfsburg are stepping up their bid to sign World Cup winner Cristian Zaccardo.Wolfsburg beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 at the Commerzbank Arena to move up to seventh place in the Bundesliga, three points shy of a UEFA Cup spot with two games left to go.

According to reports in Germany, the club are now expecting Palermo defender Zaccardo to arrive from Italy in the next few days to agree on a contract for next season.

Wolfsburg are understood to have agreed a fee of seven million euros with the Sicilian club.

With Wednesday's victory putting them within touching distance of Europe, coach Felix Magath is allowing himself to toy with the idea of qualification.

"We now have a final for a place in the UEFA Cup against Stuttgart this weekend," he said.

"Let's just see what comes out of this season in the end."

Magath had previously remained sceptical about reaching the UEFA Cup or even the Intertoto Cup in only his first year in charge, claiming he had a long-term plan for the club which did not entail such an early rise into Europe.

However, his side have the third-best record of any side since the turn of the year and, with Hamburg and Stuttgart stuttering above them, a place in Europe is there for the taking.
