Connections of totesport.com Lingfield Derby Trial candidate By Command admit they will know far more about the colt after Saturday's race.
The son of Red Ransom created a huge impression when winning a Windsor maiden by six lengths, form franked by the runner-up recently.
Trainer John Dunlop has enjoyed success with his last three runners in the race as Kong (2005), Lucido (1999) and Silver Patriarch (1997) were all successful, and hopes are high for another victory.
"By Command has had a very smooth training schedule since he won at Windsor, but it is obviously a huge jump from winning what was really a second-rate maiden to a Derby trial," said Dunlop's racing secretary Marcus Hosgood.
"The horse has certainly pleased the trainer of late. As far as Epsom is concerned, connections will know more about that after Lingfield.
"We honestly don't know if he has a preference with regard to ground conditions. At Windsor it was softish going and you can forget his run at Salisbury last year as he injured himself, so we really are in the dark."
Among the opposition will be Campanologist, transferred from Mark Johnston's Middleham yard to Godolphin after a gutsy victory in the Feilden Stakes at Newmarket, where he beat subsequent winner Kandahar Run.
Trainer Saeed bin Suroor reported: "Campanologist has been working well and has settled in nicely.
"He is in good form and is ready to go. I think he will have a nice chance in the Derby Trial on Saturday."
All eyes will be on Luca Cumani's Curtain Call, an easy winner of his seasonal reappearance at Nottingham, while Aidan O'Brien runs both Alessandro Volta and King Of Rome.
totesport's Damian Walker said: "Curtain Call has been really well-backed for the Derby since his Nottingham win, we originally went 8-1 after that win but cut him to 5-1 yesterday after decent support."
