Doug Sheppard has signed a new one-year deal to stay with Elite League play-off champions Sheffield Steelers.
The Canadian forward, 31, posted 70 points in 68 games last season and will once again return as player-assistant coach.
He said: "There is a feeling in our locker room, and probably around the city, that the Steelers are back and gunning for a league title, something every hockey fan in Sheffield really wants.
"As a Canadian we live for the play-offs but this club has a history of the league title and when you are here you quickly buy into the idea of bringing that trophy back to the Arena."
Coach David Matsos added: "Shepp was a major reason we won last year. Firstly he is a quality person, secondly a quality hockey player. Doug has the respect of every player, not only in our room but probably in the league."
