The England international was a major doubt after missing his club's last two matches after tearing a calf muscle during the 3-1 defeat against Manchester City on April 20.

However, a scan has revealed that he has healed sufficiently to reclaim his spot in the team for the second FA Cup final of his career on May 17.

James said: "I had a scan today and it's clear so I would describe myself as fit. But we'll see what the gaffer says."

The upcoming appearance at Wembley will be the high point of a renaissance in the 37-year-old's career.

In this his second season at Portsmouth, James has regained his status as first-choice keeper for England. He was also nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award, and was voted into the Team of the Year by the same organisation.

Despite making over 500 top flight appearances in his career, James has lost both of his previous FA Cup finals, losing 1-0 to Manchester United in 1996 and to Chelsea in 2000 by the same scoreline. The only major trophy he has picked up is the League Cup with Liverpool in 1995.

Meanwhile, Pompey's director of communications Gary Double has confirmed the Sol Campbell will play his last game for the club in the FA Cup final.

Double did not reveal Campbell's destination but the did admit Benfica defender Luisao is Harry Redknapp's top target to replace the veteran this summer.

"Campbell will leave and Luisao is Redknapp's preference for the defence.

"We have already spoken to Benfica and they have set the fee at £12million as a starting point for negotiations," Double said in the Daily Express.

But veteran defender Linvoy Primus has signed a new one-year deal despite the 34-year-old not playing for a year due to injury.

His knee injury meant that he did not activate a clause in his contract that would have earned him a new contract if he played a certain number of games, but the club have still decided to retain his services for next season.

The former Reading man told the club's website: "I was at the training ground last week when (chief executive) Peter Storrie pulled me to one side and said that the club wanted to offer me another year.

"I'm so happy. I'm so pleased to have been given another year, so my first words are 'thank you'."

Storrie added: "Linvoy has been a fantastic servant to this club both on and off the field. He deserves the opportunity to get fit and have a go next season."
