Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker says there can be no excuses for final day failure at Wigan.

"Sunday's game is just as important as the first of the season - United are expected to win every game they play and the clash at the JJB is no different.

But of course for this one, assuming Chelsea do what they have to against Bolton, there is no room for any slip-ups and victory is imperative if United are to be crowned champions.

A lot has been made of Steve Bruce's United connections in the build-up to the game, but I know Steve and there is no way he will want anything but success against his former club.

Wigan have never beaten United in the Premier League and I'm certain Steve will want the honour of becoming the first Latics manager to take all three points off Alex Ferguson. So you can forget about any conspiracy theories right away.

But it will be difficult for them, such is United's superiority on the field of play.

Speaking of the pitch at the JJB, it has come in for some fierce criticism so far this season but, even though it seems to have now been restored to a pristine state in time for Sunday's match, the United boss would never allow a poor pitch to be used as an excuse.

Indeed, there can be no excuses for not celebrating another title win come five o'clock on Sunday. It's simple - Manchester United should beat Wigan and pip Chelsea to the post.

Winning a title is a special feeling, especially for a first time, as the likes of Anderson, Owen Hargreaves and Nani could be about to find out.

For me, league titles count more than cups - they represent a more consistent level of performance over the course of a long hard season and as a footballer you are judged on consistency.

Comparisons have been made between this Sunday's showdown and the final day of the 1994-95 season, when United came up against an inspired Ludek Miklosko at Upton Park and simply couldn't find the back of the net.

I wasn't playing that day due to an ankle injury, but I was still around to soak up the atmosphere so I know what the pressure is like.

But there is always pressure on Manchester United players, whatever the occasion, and I believe the current squad is experienced enough to know how to handle the situation.

The boss certainly has been here before and he will look to inspire his players before they step out onto the pitch by letting them know they can take a giant leap towards becoming United legends with victory.

With the Champions League final still to come, a double will ensure every player's place in United fans' hearts. And as a player, what more of an incentive should you need?"
