Fantasy F1: On the grid in Spain

Eurosport - Fri, 08 May 12:47:00 2009

To KERS or not to KERS? It is time to select your Fantasy Grand Prix team for the Spanish round in Barcelona - and our handy hints are here to help you.

FORMULA 1 Vettel Button Trulli - 0

HOW IT WORKS

- You choose three drivers for each race - one from Group A and two from Group B - plus a team.

- The top eight finishers in the race receive 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 fantasy points respectively, plus there is a bonus point for any driver leading at any stage during the race and another for completing the entire race.

- The top three drivers in qualifying will earn 3, 2 and 1 points respectively, meaning each driver can receive a maximum of 15 fantasy points during each race and each team can earn a maximum of 27 fantasy points per race.

- Each driver and constructor can be an active member of your team in no more than four races.

The deadline to create a team for each race is 8am local time on the day of qualifying.

MONTMELO MUSINGS

Again Jenson Button is as solid a shout as you will find in the strong 'B' section: three wins - one shortened, of course - in four races is as good as it gets, frankly.

Barcelona will favour aerodynamic performance and so the Brawn cars should shine, with Red Bull also looking good having performed well without a double-decker diffuser so far.

Rubens Barrichello is desperate to play catch-up on his team-mate Button and could be a force to be reckoned with: he has finished on the Montmelo podium three times in his career, which is three occasions more than Button.

Sebastian Vettel is the best-looking Red Bull driver, and not just in terms of potential for the weekend, so consider him strongly this weekend.

Jarno Trulli has been paraded on two rostrums in Barcelona and his Toyota squad are strong: he was third in Bahrain last time out and sits fourth in the drivers' standings, while team-mate Timo Glock is yet to finish a race outside the points in 2009.

In the 'A' group Kimi Raikkonen is a name written into the circuit's folklore, having won grands prix there in 2005 and 2008, while colleague Felipe Massa is another former race winner - but don't expect the Ferraris to offer anything substantial this weekend.

BMW Sauber are not running their souped-up diffuser or KERS in Catalonia in favour of tweaking their aero capability, but don't expect it to get them anywhere after a nightmare result in the fourth round that saw them finish 18th and 19th with Kazuki Nakajima having retired.

Fernando Alonso is wringing performance out of the Renault R29 - as indeed did Nelson Piquet Jr of the 'B' group in Bahrain - and the team are hopeful that they can really step up in the coming race.

However you should give them a bit more time to become truly competitive and have a look at Lewis Hamilton, who again stuck one to his critics with fourth position in Bahrain: the MP4-24 is improving all the time and a first- and second-place finish in the last two years only enhances his case.

As for your team, Brawn should be first choice if you want to use up a pick while Red Bull and Toyota also look good, for the reasons outlined above.

Before every race we will give you the definitive guide of who is hot and who is not whilst within the game there is a Driver Performance Table - a stats tool showing you the top fantasy performers for each race of the season - and a Driver Distribution Table showing you how many managers are picking each driver.

Join up now by clicking on the link under the picture; then form a mini-league with friends, family or colleagues and watch your progress in your national league - and you may just find yourself at the top of the grid!
