Tour de France - Vinokourov wants Tour invite

Eurosport - Fri, 08 May 14:38:00 2009

Kazakh cyclist Alexander Vinokourov is hoping to get an invitation to take part in next year's Tour de France after his ban for blood doping ends in July.

CYCLING 2007 Tour de France Vinokourov - 0

"I know that it will be tough to convince the organisers but I will do everything I can to ride the 2010 Tour," the 35-year-old told sports daily L'Equipe.

"I am realistic, I cannot win the Tour de France, but why not the polka dot jersey (for best climber)?"

Vinokourov's positive test came after he won a time trial during the 2007 Tour de France. He was kicked out of the race and his Astana team were asked by organisers to leave the event.

  1. They all do drugs. He was just fool enough to get caught. Let him ride.

From James, on Mon 1 Jun 2:00AM
  2. AS MUCH AS I LIKE VINI HE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO RACE NOR SHOULD ANY ONE ELSE WHO GOT CAUGHT.

  3. why not?at least he dosen´t ride ion the other peoples wheels...and everyone deserves second chances...or you think the hole cyclist that are profis they ride clean?for me they all take doping...and then they train hard, and then we get some top cyclists with diferent talents...mountain,hills,sprint,etc... do wou think is human possible to ride 21 days with 2 rest days more than 3000 km with an averaged speed of 42 km/h??if you take the "special products" cycling becomes boring...

  4. he was my hero...until he was found out for doping!they should not let him back!no drug cheets should be aloud to ride in major tours!

  5. Letting Vino back will send the wrong message to the outside world about cycling.
We have all been duped by these @#$% earning money & our admiration until they are exposed as cheats and liars.
There is no way the TDF organisers will allow him to ride - thank goodness.

  6. enid - i wish i could be as open minded as that.
but really, Vino was guilty of the simplest and most obvious form of doping known to human kind....do i really think these guys are rational enough to "feel like #@$@# for being exposed as a cheat?"

i don't think they really care, truthfully, aside from not being able to get paid to ride when on suspension.

i'm not saying "no second chances" - but i can't just decide that it's all not worth stressing about and assume everyone has made the necessary mind switch......

maybe we just put them all on the same team :)

From the FISH, on Fri 8 May 4:27PM
  7. He's first got to find a team that will trust him to not drag their squad down the toilet, good luck. Perhaps that's Astana's grand plan, withold payment until Lance and Bruyneel go away and then swoop in with the Nuevo Vino!! What about Kashechkin? He probably needs a job.

  8. Let him in. Let Floyd Landis in. Let Tyler Hamilton in. Let Ullrich in. Let Lance in. Let Beloki in. Let Heras in. Let Santi Perez in. Let Basso in. Let them all in. For a charity ride up a mountain. Forgive and forget and give all the money to charity. Let bygones be bygones and give them a fresh start, after they serve their suspensions. They need to have fresh starts. They're athletes first. They've trained hard. They probably feel like @#$% after getting exposed as cheats. Put them all together in a 'Tour of Forgiveness' The fans'll come and they might do some nice charity work!

From Enid, on Fri 8 May 1:41PM
  9. It is rather interesting to see how negatively people react to Vino's intent to come back, while Basso's return is celebrated and he is treated like a hero by many. There is no difference between the two, all cheats should be treated the same way. No double standards please.

From merkadam, on Fri 8 May 1:39PM
  10. He has as much chance of riding the Tour again as Rasmussen, ZERO.

    From demi162, on Fri 8 May 1:02PM
  11. Why is everyone treating him differently than all the other riders who have been caught and 'done their time'?
It would take a fool to believe any of the recent winners have been clean as EPO has such a vast benefit in stage races, so if Vino is to be not allowed back we had better start looking at banning a whole generation of riders.

From SteveH, on Fri 8 May 12:56PM
  12. Vino is INNOCENT!!!
Let him ride in this year's TDF!

    From cinogen2020, on Fri 8 May 12:08PM
  13. please do not allow any guilty drug taking riders into the TOUR DE FRANCE, lets try and keep the race clean for the good of sport.

From powermouse, on Fri 8 May 11:56AM
  14. Firstly, can u p1ss off with your 4rsenal rubbish.
Vino is a cheating rat - Evans and Cancellara owe him a punch on the nose.
But look how many cheats are back racing, so it won't be long before this one is too.

From ffogil, on Fri 8 May 10:55AM
  15. Come on this guy is got to be joking after what happened in 2007.....he is a total disgrace to the sport and no cycling fan really wants to see him ride again.......

    From ??, on Fri 8 May 10:52AM
  16. His positive brought huge discredit to the sport at a time when it was under scrutiny, he should never be allowed to ride again.

From jbandbetsymac, on Fri 8 May 10:18AM
  17. Under no circumstances should this cheat be allowed race again, let alone the Tour De France, the cheak of the 'man'.
