Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has been ruled out of Saturday's Barclays Premier League trip to West Ham.
The Spain star suffered severe bruising in the tackle that brought Joey Barton a red card - and subsequently censure from his manager Alan Shearer - in last weekend's 3-0 win over Newcastle.
Manager Rafael Benitez has better news elsewhere, with Fernando Torres (hamstring) and Javier Mascherano (ankle) both fit to travel to Upton Park.
"Xabi is not fit and cannot play," Benitez said.
"We think maybe in the next week he will be okay. We had an idea that he could be fit for this game but in the end it was impossible.
"Javier was training and is in the squad, and so is Fernando."

lcfthebestp- if winning the leauge doesn't matter then what does? im sure u would b sayin differently i u were about to WIN the leauge...
The irony that manure player still holding chants and rants 'rafa is cracking up' they're trying to forget disgraceful double win against them :=D Winning the league doesn't matter , As far as Im concerned BlackBurn rovers won it and they're about to be relegated. Still we'll win it!
oh well atleast we have el nino (torres) that should do it
My only problem is that each time one of our midfielders get injured, the useless lucas will be given a chance to play. That guy sucks. It is always as we are one man down each time he plays.
Alonso gets injured by this "Thug" Barton, so Liverpool are penalised for two weeks or more???
Players like Barton should be banned - Period!
come on liverpool baet the hammers and then city to beat united on sunday for a double whammy.
torres can then rest from the west brom game and score the goal that wins us the league against spurs
job done
good luck liverpool dont read the letters from the @#$% above :::::jealous:::::
Agreed good news hopefully Liverpoo will lose
