Frank Lampard refused to condemn Didier Drogba for his angry reaction to Chelsea's Champions League exit at the hands of Barcelona.
The Ivory Coast striker ranted at referee Tom Henning Ovrebo after Wednesday's semi-final about a number of rejected penalty appeals and also swore on live television, for which he later apologised.
"I can understand Didier's reactions," said Lampard. "He's an emotional man. That's the sort of player you want to play with and I think people can relate to that.
"All the fans in the stadium were frustrated at the end and I don't think people should make too much out of that.
"We were trying to get to the final and when that gets taken away you get passionate about it."

I respect Lampard quite a bit, but I don't know how all these players keep defending this guy. Of course they know him better than I do, but come on.
He pretty much quits on the team when Scolari is coach, just because he doesn't like his tactics and so he played bad, sulked and cried in the corner, and mostly watched from the bench. Hiddink "revives" Drogba. Good for Hiddink, but what does that tell you about Drogba?
He is also a diving cheat, flopping like a jelly fish when guys half of his size breathe on him too heavily. Someone that big and strong doesn't need to go to ground so often.
Now the guy goes off on one of the most un-sportsman like tirades in the history of professional sports, and his team runs to his defense.
I don't care how many bad calls the refs make, you just don't treat the officals like this. I'm sorry.
There is a time and place for the referee to face judgement for his bad calls, but the players aren't the ones to be doing the judging. The frustration is certainly understandable, but the over the top theatrics are just a lack of class and respect.
Didier Drogba is an overgrown baby, who cries when he doesn't get his way.
And if he would have just FINISHED HIS CHANCE that Anelka left for him then the refs wouldn't have mattered, Chelsea would have been up 2-0.
Just FINISH Drogba, do your job, don't worry about other people's.
Lampard is quiet right in what he has said. If you are emotional person you will realise the effect of feeling extremely cheated. People who are condemning Drogba can never say that they have been furious in their life. Parker Paul I do not see what controbution he has made to soccer than being a completion of a team or sitting on the bench. If Parker was a great footballer he should be coach a team.
What goes around comes around, Drogba's cheating has cost many another team the points in a match but as soon as Chelsea feel hard done by they start ranting like maniacs and think everybody should feel sorry for them, well tough, play by the rules yourselves next season instead of thinking it is ok to cheat to get a result.
F Lampard shows himself to be as bad as Drogba, one behaves like a spoilt brat for not being good enough to score the goals he's paid a fortune to get, prefers to fall down when it's easier to score. And Lampard thinks that kind of behavior is acceptable - god help football if they get away with it.
Give long bans to Drogba and Ballack, these people would find something to complain about in an empty room, they make me sick.
Frank Lampard is a gentleman.....and honorable. Unlike that pethetic referee, or that weasal Platini, who cannot bare to see two English teams in the final, yet again.
And why would there have been two English teams in the final.....because we have the best league and best teams in the world......and Platini cant stand that.
If the rest of Europe want to compete with us......let then do it fairly.....not by bringing on a TOTALLY INEPT referee who 'gave' the game to Barcelona.
I understand all those of you who say.....Chelsea should have won the game without needing any of those penalties....true.....but even though Barcelona had by far, greater possession......when it came to actual threats inside the penalty box....Chelsea were far superior.
And Barcelona could only stop Chelsea by foul means.....they must be laughing their socks off with getting away with so many denied penalties.
I HOPE MAN U KICK THERE CHEATING @#$% ALL THE WAY BACK TO SPAIN.
