Dundee United manager Craig Levein bemoaned a missed opportunity after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Aberdeen at Tannadice.
The Dons took the lead with a Lee Miller goal completely against the run of play but went into the interval having conceded a quickfire equaliser to David Goodwillie's header.
However, former United midfielder Mark Kerr ensured the Dons had to hang on for a vital point when he was shown a straight red card for dissent with 14 minutes remaining.
A victory would have sent the Tannadice side third following Hearts' defeat in the Edinburgh derby and would also have extended their lead over Aberdeen to a virtually unassailable seven points with only three games left to play.
"With Hearts losing I see it as two points dropped," Levein said. "It's a home match and at half-time I felt very, very confident.
"We were shooting down the hill towards our own supporters and with the way we played in the first half I thought we would go on to win the game."
