Pole takes first grand prix win in typically chaotic Canadian GP.
The Canadian Grand Prix once again lived up to its reputation as the most unpredictable race on the Formula One calendar, with Robert Kubica coming through to take his first win in the category one year after his life-threatening accident at the same event.
The race was thrown wide open when Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen were taken out in a bizarre pit-lane incident while the field circulated behind the safety car after Adrian Sutil's car had to be craned away.
Both Kubica and Raikkonen appeared to get the jump on Hamilton, but had to stop at the end of pit-lane as the red light remained on for the safety car to filter through turns one and two. Hamilton, however, did not appear to notice the lights and, locked up, ploughed straight into - and over - the back of Raikkonen's Ferrari.
Kubica, meanwhile, escaped the contact, but had to watch as BMW team-mate Nick Heidfeld took the lead, having not stopped under the safety car. When the German did finally take on fuel and tyres, it was with a view to going the distance and, returning in front of Kubica, it looked a good decision. The Pole, however, soon found a way through, and then pulled out enough of a gap to ensure that he rejoined in front after his own second stop.
With Ferrari and McLaren not getting the strategy right for either of their remaining cars, and the track surface accounting for Fernando Alonso, the sharp end of the field featured some unusual names - including Rubens Barrichello, Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli, all of whom led for a while.
It was Kubica who came through the chaos, however, heading home team-mate Heidfeld and Red Bull's David Coulthard. The ten points were also enough to lift Kubica into the lead of the world championship.
