Lotus bid for F1 return

Eurosport - Mon, 08 Jun 11:49:00 2009

Team Lotus has joined a list of resurrected names from the sport's glittering past seeking a return to Formula One next season.

FORMULA 1 Jim Clark Lotus - 0

The Norfolk-based Litespeed Formula Three team said in a statement ahead of Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix they had submitted an application to the governing FIA to enter Formula One next season as Team Lotus.

They added that former Lotus grand prix driver Johnny Herbert had joined as "driver manager and global commercial ambassador".

Former Renault, Toyota and Force India technical director Mike Gascoyne is also involved in the project.

The FIA is due to announce the entry list next Friday, with at least 10 would-be new entrants seeking to compete under a budget cap.

Others include a Brabham Grand Prix team entered by a German businessman, who bought the assets of the failed Super Aguri team, Lola and March.

Kuwaiti-financed Prodrive have also applied with their entry, if successful, likely to race eventually under the Aston Martin name.

Force India and former champions Williams are the only existing teams to have submitted unconditional entries, with the other eight attaching conditions to their joint application under the Formula One Teams Association umbrella.

The FIA has said there would be room for three new teams if all the current ones stayed.

However, FOTA and the FIA are at loggerheads over the 2010 rules, with champions Ferrari and others threatening to walk away unless the regulations are rewritten to remove an optional £40 million.

"The FIA's new regulations are a bold initiative which allow for a level playing field in the sport for the first time," said Team Lotus principal Nino Judge, himself a former Lotus engineer, in the Team Lotus statement.

"It underpins our objective to re-establish the Team Lotus name and paves the way for us to introduce a competitive car."

The original Team Lotus was founded by the late Colin Chapman and made its debut in 1958.

It remains the fourth most successful Formula One team with 73 grand prix wins, seven constructors' titles and six drivers' crowns between 1963 and 1978.

Chapman died in 1982 and the team's last race was in 1994.

  4. david_cowan - Does this mean that it would be proper to keep the name Lotus F1 dead forever? Because Lotus has been gone for so long (as has brabham etc) that I cannot see how it will be revived in any other way. Lets face it no one can ever replace Chapman, but maybe from the ashes? And who knows, they might really be into the Lotus heritage and do the best job they can for Lotus fans. I say its worth giving them the chance. It maybe a genuine Lotus revival from an unlikely source!

  5. They can buy a name off e-bay, paint the car whatever colour they like but how can it in any way shape or form be a Lotus ? Would you guys be so happy if it was a Proton running around in Max's Pri-mark F1 series ?

  6. Cashel - Yes, founding fathers die but in many cases the team continues on. There is always some kind of thread - family, factory etc. Or, if there is no thread, the trend in the past has been a bigger outfit taking over a smaller one and using the name.
What we are seeing here is no real connection at all - just a name being purchased. And a more illustrious name/ outfit than those purchasing it. We have a genuine major British outfit with an uninterupted thread of real history (Mclaren) being replaced by a small English F3 team (Litespeed), plucking a name from the past. How can this be construed as being good for F1 or for British Motor Racing?

  8. Chapman died in 82, but the lotus name continued into the 90's, I did not see anybody complaining then? Should Ferrari disband because Enzo died? What about Mclaren? Brawn is a good one, what on earth can you say about them, and Renault ofcourse. None of these (and many others) have there founding fathers at the helm. Most of them have moved factorys and premises and a bet you none of them have have original team members.

So most of them are names past from owner to owner, names purchased and changed over the years or kept the same. The point is that Renault are a UK based team rkun by a French owner! No one complains that they are not Renault, or points out that English people run the factory and make the car. Remember Ferrari are now just a branch of Fiat and the name is only kept alive for marketing purposes, thats all. Get some real idiots in charge of the motor racing arm and bang!!!!!

I guess my point is that things change and you can have either the name or the reality, but very rarely both.

  10. what a way to make a REAL RACING TEAM LIKE LOTUS AND DISGRACE ITS NAME!!!!
A lowest of the low F3 team LIGHTSPEED using a great British Name like LOTUS Gasgoigne should be banned from all F1 and te BBC forever.
And this is how Max n Bernie want F1 ro be? Thats Brabham March now Lotus what next COOPER, BRM, EMBASSY HILL, SHADOW, DISGRACEFUL F1 UTTERLY DISGRACEFUL

  11. It is soooo obvious that Burt and Touronroute are one an the same person.
    a) look at their appalling, childish grammar,
    b) Look at their one-topic material and
    c) They always turn up at the same time.

I think I have proved my point.

Touron you are the weakest link - buzz off.

  15. well if Lotus can make a come back to F1 , good luck to them, and I didnt say they should be painted racing Green, I just said bring that back too. it could be LOTUS or BRAWN or even MCLAREN, just as long as its a British racing team.

  17. The return of Lotus is in name only. Those who cite how, in the past, the current big manufacturers bought small teams and built them up under their own name to what they are now, should consider that what F1 is doing is the reverse. Former, big names like Lotus and Brabham are having their names used by small, backmarker F3 teams. This is the direction that F1 is going under a cost cap - the big will become small and legendary names will become devalued. This is just Moselys smoke and mirrors at work - he is gambling that no-one will notice that they are watching GP2 with an F1 stripe. A Ford Fiesta in British racing green is still a Ford Fiesta...
