Rooney out to end major disappointment

England striker Wayne Rooney is desperate to make up for his last two major tournaments after they ended in disappointment.

Rooney burst onto the international scene at Euro 2004 but was injured in the quarter-finals, then he was sent off at the same stage of World Cup two years later. The 23-year-old can almost taste the biggest tournament in the world again after six wins from six in qualifiers on the road to South Africa ahead of Wednesday's clash with Andorra.

"You look to play in the big tournaments and the two I've played in have ended in real disappointment so hopefully we can qualify and I can help this team win something in the future," the Manchester United forward said.

"Of course you think about it, it's one of the biggest tournaments in the world and a win on Wednesday will be a massive step for us."

Rooney scored the third goal in the 4-0 win over Kazakhstan and agrees with Capello's assessment that the team can score from anywhere on the pitch.

"I was delighted to score," he said. "In the end it was a good result with four goals and the win.

"We're doing quite well. We could have played better at times and it was a difficult pitch so we are delighted to come away with three points.

"We're delighted to win the games and it's always nice when you score goals as well. There were four different scorers against Kazakhstan and that is good for the team. Steven Gerrard scored 20-odd goals this season, Frank Lampard too and Emile (Heskey) now has two in his last two for England. There are a lot of players who can score goals in the team."

England's victory in Almaty came after Kazakhstan gave them an early scare.

"We expected it to be honest," Rooney added. "We knew the first half hour of the game would be quite tough. We had to get through that and they would get quite tired with the tempo of the game. Thankfully we took our chances."
