Premier League - City release big name trio

PA Sport - Tue, 08 Jun 12:49:00 2010

Manchester City trio Martin Petrov, Benjani Mwaruwari and Sylvinho will all leave Eastlands this summer after the club opted not to offer them new contracts.

- 0

All three were used only sparingly by boss Roberto Mancini last season and their departures were expected, with the Italian set to bring in a number of players during the close season.

Petrov was signed by Sven-Goran Eriksson from Atletico Madrid in 2007 and enjoyed an impressive debut season on the wing. But the Bulgarian's time at City was blighted by injuries and he leaves having made 57 starts, scoring 15 goals.

Striker Benjani was another Eriksson purchase, arriving from Portsmouth in January 2008 after netting on a regular basis during the first half of the season.

He made an instant impact by scoring the winner on his debut against Manchester United but he faded out of the picture and spent the end of this season on loan at Premier League rivals Sunderland, where he failed to score in eight matches.

Brazil defender Sylvinho joined City last summer after helping Barcelona win the Champions League but the 36-year-old was restricted to only nine starts.

  4. thats because all you idiots forget that Fergie bought 3 entire teams between 86 - 91 before he was lucky enough to have fergie time, 8 minutes.

So dont give me the cr4p about man u not spending. They have broke every transfer record since 1986 and still do it today.

You just look at their squads 86-91
Look at chelsea squads under Vialli they had the entire French defense with romanians and italians.
Look at aRSENAL when arsen won.

    THEY ALL BUY TO WIN

  8. that paul g is an idiot. he must be the only guy on the planet that thinks arsenal under arsene wenger spends money. you should really look at our players and then google them and see how much we spend. clubs as low as middlesbourough, aston villa, newcastle, tottenham, leeds, west ham, liverpool, etc regularly outsepnd us

  9. the premierleague has always been won by those who spend the most.

thats the point of the league.

    man u, blackburn, chelsea, arsenal

all spent stupid money to win the title and to stay there.

Man city will do the same and at which point Man U, arsenal, chelsea will complain that money is ruining the game.

cause they are ph uuk heads

Hey gunga why should fans live in the past you clown, its the way the league is going and all the crying an whinging in the world wont change that.utd and liverpool are up to there eyes in debt and there owners dont know ther arses from ther elbows an i would nt be suprised if they both get takin over by arab billionaires and do the same, but untill then its up to city and chelsea to battle it out for the top players along with real and barca and we will have to live with it and this comming from a spurs supporter.

  13. Petrov did a good job when he was fit but seems injury prone this season. Benjani never looked fit and often out of his depth. Good luck to them and shame on those who offer nothing but cheap shots here. If you change your perspective you can change your life for the better - no matter how miserable you are now - and you will win new friends and enrich the lives of your family & friends.

  14. They wer ordinary players in an ordinary team, they came in before the sheiks and are not good enough for a team that wants to challenge for the champions league spots.im sure they will be replaced by some multi million pound stars after the world cup.i think it is foolish to think that city wont be challenging next year.you dont win the premier league you buy it nowadays and city have the cash.

  15. no need to get personal.

I watched him all season. He doesnt understand tactical play, he just doesnt get it. Thats why i call him a waster because in the premier league he is no more than a mid table player.
Such a waste of talent because he has no brain.

If you still dont realise he is loopy just check out how he conducts himself on and off the field.

  16. Sounds like Nouvuea Riche talk to me. Man City will never make it in the premiership. It takes years to build a club and no amount of Oil/Gas or gold will make that happen.

  20. These guys just did not get the matches under their belts to prove just how good they were at Man. City They all proved themselver prior to joining Man City but frequent manager changes upsets players confidence as new managers like to bring in their own players. Lo0k at Stephen Ireland & S.Wright-Phillips, they would be going too if thier contracts were ending for they do not fit into Mancini's style, they are not in the managers 1st team anymore.
So do not knock any of these three excellant players who will be good again wherever they sign for. Good luck to them!
Look at Santa-Cruz too, he will be on his way soon in the future. & What a let down City's left back is, reason he did not go to join his country is because he was scared of letting England down - the guys a bridesmaid.
I used to like Man. City but not anymore as they are destined to loose out of the top 4 just wait & see.
