El Maachi shocks Witter to win Prizefighter
Yassine El Maachi shocked former world champion Junior Witter in the final to win 'Prizefighter - the welterweights' at York Hall in Bethnal Green.
Witter (pictured), 37, was favourite for the final in the East End of London after dominant wins against Nathan Graham and Kevin McIntyre.
Meanwhile Moroccan-born El Maachi, who lives in London, was fortunate to be awarded his semi-final against local fighter Colin Lynes.
However Witter was unable to impose himself on the three-round finale after a clean early shot, with both boxers missing from distance before the Yorkshireman found himself on the deck twice as they became tangled.
A further incident when Witter was wrongfooted saw him crash through the ropes in one corner and into an unfortunate cameraman.
One judge scored it a draw while the other two awarded the fight to El Maachi by a round.
Witter won the WBC light-welterweight title four years ago but has now lost four of his last seven contests.
