Alonso Happy To Stay At Anfield

Tue 08 Jul, 10:09 AM

Xabi Alonso insists he would have no problem staying at Liverpool, as a proposed move to Juventus stalls due to the two clubs' inability to settle on a transfer fee.

The Spanish midfielder was expected to tie-up a switch to Serie A at the conclusion of the European Championship after Liverpool intimated a willingness to sell.

Gareth Barry's long-protracted move from Aston Villa was thought to be reliant on Alonso's exit generating funds but the likely departure of Peter Crouch to Portsmouth would swell the transfer coffers significantly.

And should it be that Juve fail to match Liverpool's valuation, Alonso will be more than content to stay on Merseyside.

"I am very happy with Liverpool, the city, the people and they treat me very well," Alonso is quoted in The Sun.

"It's great to be European champion with my club and with my country but I'd love a league medal.

"It's the one that is missing."

  3. Alonso may not have been at his best last season, but he certainly is a top player and fits very well into Liverpool alongside Mascherano, giving Stevie G the freedom to play attacking support (not having to play too much in defensive midfield) - Gerrard and Torres as dream team, glimpses of which have seen many already... and this is only the beginning! It would be great if Alonso stayed, hoping that his best years are yet to come - and that he will indeed win this one medal we all long for! I am not sure whether Barry would fulfill all hopes some people have. Perhaps it would be better to keep Alonso and try to buy David Bentley instead of Barry.

  4. Torres isn't bad in the air, but at the same time its not his best attribute. Crouch offered us something different when things weren't working, and thats what we need to come in if he does go. Robbie Keane is a great finisher and a natural poacher, but part of me wonders how similar to Torres he would be, and if that would be a good thing.

  5. Am happy Alonso stays. Too bad Crouch is going, coz he plays really well and he's the only forward at Liverpool who has aerial ability. I just hope Benitez gets someone who can partner Torres and can put pressure on defenders, esp in the air!

  6. Muxh like with Crouch, if Alonso wants to go to get regular football he should be allowed, as both players have served the club well. If either stay though, I will be happy. Crouch is awkward to defend and Alonso is an incredible player. Barry could be good, but also has proved he has what it takes to play for Liverpool. I'd prefer money to be spent on a quality winger or another striker to take pressure off Torres.

  9. Not a Liverpool fan but they would be making one hell of a mistake if they sell him as he is a top class player. One of the best deep-line playmakers in the world alongside Pirlo and Xavi. He is a rare breed and Liverpool should hang on to him.

Also 4-3-3 seems to be the most consistant and well-balanced formation these days and i think him in midfield with Gerrard and Mascherano protecting the back four would be a great formation. Babel and Kuyt on either rotating on either wing with Torres in the centre drifting and dropping off.

Don't know why the hell i just don't go for a coaching badge! lol!
