Premier League - Capel rules out Spurs move

Eurosport - Tue, 08 Jul 14:42:00 2008

Tottenham's summer transfer plans have been dealt a further blow after Sevilla winger Diego Capel ruled out a move to White Hart Lane.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 La Liga Sevilla Diego Capel - 0

The Primera Liga club rejected a bid from Spurs for the highly-rated youngster last week, even though Tottenham's offer exceeded a buy-out clause in his contract which allows him to speak to other Spanish teams.

Tottenham are now managed by former Sevilla boss Juande Ramos, but 20-year-old Capel claims even if his current club were to accept a bid he would not be interested in leaving.

"Now I'm a Sevilla player and what I want to do is enjoy that," he told the club's website.

"I hope to be here for a long time, certainly, because I won't listen to offers from other sides."

He added: "The club has made some great signings and we hope things turn out well.

"The objective this season is to qualify for the Champions League and we hope this will be a successful year."

It is the second time Spurs have been on the receiving end of a rejection this week after Hamburg midfielder Rafael van der Vaart also ruled out a move to the north London club.

Spurs had been linked with the highly-rated Holland international, who has become one of this summer's most sought after players following an impressive showing at the European Championship.

But the 25-year-old, who has been joined at Hamburg by his compatriot - and former Spurs boss - Martin Jol, sees no reason to leave the Bundesliga for a club like Tottenham.

He told Sportsweek: "The interest has been there for some time already, but they (Tottenham) are not the club I want to go to. Tottenham are not a club I want to swap Hamburg for.

He added: "The chance that I will stay at HSV is really big. As long as no team comes by which makes me immediately excited, I see no reason to leave. And so far none of those clubs have called us."

Earlier in the summer, another Ramos target, Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o, also ruled out a move to White Hart Lane, saying he felt Spurs were "a mid-table club".

Ramos has, however, succeeded in capturing both Luka Modric and Giovani Dos Santos this summer. Croatian midfielder Modric, another who impressed during Euro 2008, signed for £16.6 million from Dinamo Zagreb, while Dos Santos arrived in a £4.7 million deal from Barcelona.

  1. now we know eto'o aint a gd player coz a gd player wun shun away the challenge of helpin a so-called mid table team to brk into the top 4. im a manchurian but 1 team tt i kinda like othr den e red devils is actually spurs. dey have gd young players & juande ramos + gus poyet management kinda excites me. haha.. btw eto'o, spurs jux won themselves a silverware last season, wad have u got durin ur daes @ mallorca? if i din remember wrongly, maradona played for napoli, klinnsmann graced e lane b4 & so many othr players who r truly gr8, took up the challenge of helpin a not-yet-formidable team to win trophys!! eto'o is gd but by rejectin spurs & self-proclaimin tt its a mid table team, im reali glad spurs din get him. w/ the $ tt spurs got, dey can actually replace the gunners as 1 of the new top 4. but credits due, arsenal plays fantastic football, spurs got to beat that b4 dey can call themselves 1 of the big 4. othrwise dey wld b like chelski. loads of $ but no skills or what-so-ever. sheva? haha.. eto'o beware, u mite end up like him. go, go ahead & get urself a big club.. haha..

  2. ITS A SHAME THAT PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT A SMALLER CLUB IN THIS COUNTRY CAN BE SO JEALOUS OF TOTTENHAM HAVING THE SPENDING POWER AND OPPURTINITY EACH YEAR TO BUY IN DECENT PLAYERS ITS AN HARD LIFE SUPPORTING @#$% !

  3. I am glad some of these players are slating our club when we either put in an offer or show inerest. I don;t want them type of players at my beloved spurs. They may still be good players but I hate these wage driven glory hunters who have forgotten what it means to realy love the club you are playing for. If these so called greats (eto) have any real guts they would pick a team who are looking like they are close to competing with the top fours like everton, man city, aston villa, blackburn, spurs. These teams if big name players were to come could change the way the premiership is, some of them like spurs and man city can even afford the rediculous wages but they are after champions league which means they are joining a club who have had other players already do it for the club.

If these players joined the outside top four clubs they could be the players who were responsible for the rise and success of that club. In my eyes you have players like keane/(dare i say it Fabergas) who will fight and die for their shirts and want success for the club they are at, and then you have players like eto/ drogba/ van der vaart who will go to a club that has already done which they won't have to fight for.

    Moan over lol.

  4. Typical Ar5ena1 comment. Think maybe you should worry about your own problems. Adebayor wanting £120k per week or he's off, Hleb off, Flamini gone. Mortgage to pay on the 'Emiroids. No British players = no loyalty to the badge.

As for Spurs - we get linked to everyone, then sign others out of the blue. Only realistic chance of challenging top 4 this year is by keeping the likes of Berba, Keane and splashing out on more signings like Modric. Some intersting times ahead either way. Another cup and top 6 is more realistic.

  5. when will you yid's accept you are a poor/average football team no wonder players wont come to you what was santos thinking i give him 6 months till he realises

  8. Must credit Spurs for the signings so far. They are really a club on the up and could maybe challenge the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool for 4th spot.
Have to laugh at Van Dar Vaart though, he think's he better than he actually is. If he's any good he'd be pplaying in one of the top leagues, not living the easy life in the dutch league.

  9. Interesting how when a player turns someone down (on the basis that said club isn't big) the fans must instantly slag the player off as meaningless. This begs the question if he is so meaningless, why were you going for him in the first place?

  10. I pity you if you really want Bentley!! He might be talented but he is so self centered that he won't stay too long with you either if you get him. He's another Anelka believing his own press thinking he's too big for clubs.

From njburch, on Tue 8 Jul 4:18PM
  11. Well said supernovam, Spurs are on the way up, a blip last season but definitely a top five side. Bentley has the quality to change the way Spurs attack and he may have a slight temper but we need someone to fight in the midfield as no one does at the minute.

  12. tottenham fans must feel like @#$%!! its their fault i guess, they always link them selfs to good players and they always get shunned. no offense to spurs, as i really like them as a club..but they need to be realistic.

  13. Have these jumped up Johnny foreign players not realized Spurs are a big club now! Or at the very least onm the verge of becoming a top 5 club once more. Van Der Faaart can stay in Hamburg, like skunkie says we will have Bentley and a proud English player playing in the Premiership for a forward thinking well run club.

  14. Why is he up his backside because he won't move to mid-table Spurs?
These people want champions league and Spurs have never been there.....

  15. Bentley? I do not know? Whatabout his temper?

    From a.bice, on Tue 8 Jul 3:00PM
  16. You think that Van Der Vaart has "proven to be stuck up his own backside" and you would welcome Bentley, that makes sense.

From Nick P, on Tue 8 Jul 12:07PM
  17. Don't really fancy Van Der Vaart anyway, been proven to be stuck up his own backside. Capel would have been good signing but lets just go for Bentley and bring in some English players who would be proud to play for Spurs!
