Cristiano Ronaldo has said the £80 million Real Madrid paid for him is a "fair price" and he is delighted to be the most expensive player in the world.
"I think that it's a fair figure," he told Marca. "If Manchester United and Real Madrid agree this amount, then there is nothing more to say. I'm happy to be the most expensive player in the world."
The signing of Ronaldo has captured everyone's attention and imagination as Madrid finally got their man this summer to end a transfer saga that has lasted more than two years.
It took an astronomical fee to persuade United to part with the winger, and Madrid have come in for a fair amount of criticism from both inside and outside the footballing community for spending so much money in the current global financial crisis.
However, Ronaldo believes Madrid are justified in paying the fee - and also feels he can live up to the price tag.
"The great players cost a lot of money, and if you want them you have to pay it," he added.
In response to those who have qualms about so much money being spent on one footballer, he added: "I respect everyone's opinions, but I don't agree with these people.
"If Real Madrid have paid so much money, it's because they wanted me and have considered it a fair price.
"I'm going to try to do everything in my hands to play very well and I will show that the money they are paying for me has been a good decision."
But is Ronaldo right? Have Real done a good piece of business by paying so much for his services or will they rue paying so much money?

no football player is worth 80 million pound.
fraserdigby, you may be right but I do not agree with some of ur comments. Saying SAF is afraid of true talent. It's not true. Ronaldo did very well for ManU and it was time for him to leave. I'm not too sure if he would have been better next season. He may be good at Madrid (good luck for them and for him). But SAF , his role is to find new talent and make them big that's why I respect SAF and that's why he's successful!
Anyway forget Ronaldo.....what's Michael Owen's price at the end of the season?
A club like Manchester United should be able to keep a genius like Ronaldo. We gave him away. His image rights must be worth £80m alone over the next 6 years before he even walks upon a football pitch. He’ll make David Beckam look C list. There may be five geniuses like him every century. We’ve been lucky to have had two of them. For younger viewers, Best was the other one. The fat boy Ronaldo ( not one of the five ) sold for £50m 10 years ago ). Our Ronaldo is twice the player. The reason that we're a feeder club for Real Madrid is Alex Ferguson. He thinks he's bigger than Manchester United. He's afraid of true talent. He can't handle us having real quality players, stars who rise above him. If you have a look at Ronaldo Youtube vids. Ronaldo shows his pure genius time and time again, and time and time again with the whole of Old Trafford going wild Ronaldo glimpses over to see Ferguson with his arms folded and that silly half smile / hair dryer look. His pure genius talent made Ferguson squirm.
Have a look at ‘ Cristiano Ronaldo Free Kicks ’ on You Tube.
1 min 47sec Ronaldo double swerve. Ronaldo glimpses over to see Ferguson's no reaction.
2 min 23 sec Ronaldo glimpses over to Ferguson. 3 min 06 sec Ferguson half stands. No reaction.
3 min 29 sec 92nd min winner against Sporting. Ferguson sits with arms folded.
4 min 40 sec Glimpses over.
5 min 22 sec Ronaldo comments. Never truer words said.
Would Ronaldo have left if Mourinho was Man Utd manager? I don’t think so. They would have fed off each other into stratospheric brilliance and then we wouldn’t need to buy as Ronaldo would have realised that the only club to play for is Manchester United.
If Fergie was real clever he would have fed Ronaldo’s ego and kept him for a year or two telling him that when he moves he’ll be the world’s first £100,000,000 player. I think Ronaldo, being the greedy f*** that he is, would have gone for that one.
PS. Does anyone know where I can get a good compilation of all those free kicks that Ronaldo pissed away last season? Just to make me feel better.
It just shows that he is an arrogant idiot. If he really was a good sportsman and a good man he wouldn't say this even if he really was "worth £80".
im lookin 4ward 2 him flopin next year..he thinks hes better than mardona and pele...wat a plonker
he is not decisive enough in a match to be worth so much
no you supid idiot... you not worh so much.. madrid will regret there dicision. sooner rather than later
What a crass, arrogant ignoramus! Guess the word 'humility' doesn't feature in his vocabulary. The English game is well rid of his childish antics. United did the best thing in letting him go. Fantastic piece of business on their part getting £80 million for a self-opinionated noodle!
no ronaldo is not worth 80 milion!!!!! he would be a disco dancer that is wat he should be
@kielchamp12: its not very smart to copy EXACTLY my comment and paste it when people can still see my original comment at the bottom of the SAME page....!
Man U fans are all ingrates , now they started hating CR forgeting what he contributed to the success of their team in the past six years. go go go Ronaldo .
nooooooooooooooooo way...i hate ronaldo....kaka and messi are much much better than him....but i'm still gonna be a big fan of Madrid for life...
To be perfectly honest, I think the price is obsene. The fact of the matter is that Chelsea have created such inflated market pricing. If Manchester could pay #30m+ for Robhino, then I think Ronaldo is worth at least twice as much considering the fact he has single handedly won the titles for United in the past two seasons. Remember, United were struggling at the begining of last season simply because he was out injured and they only started wining once he started playing. I hate his arrogance, but there is no doubt in my mind at all that, he has been the best palyer in the world by a margin for the past two years. But not for his contributions, my club Liverpool would have won the title without breaking any sweat.
I really don't know if he will be as successful as Madrid thinks he will......... But, I don't thinks there is any player worth that much! He was just lucky that Madrid went panic buying, after one of their worst seasons in their history. Time will tell!!!
He is a good player, but his crybabyness and selfish attitude makes him despicable!
I respect players like Zidane, who was the most expensive-best player in the world, he kept his friendly and lovely attitude and earned the respect of the globe.
Ronaldo will not be as happy at Real, because his fame and glory is now shared among all the stars on the team compared to fewer "stars" at Man United.
ronaldo is the best player...
his ability is undeniably the best in the world
80 millon is worth for a cr7
