McGarry tips Steelmen to show mettle

Motherwell midfielder Steven McGarry is confident his team can turn around their Europa League qualifier against Llanelli after getting more time to absorb the ideas of new manager Jim Gannon.

The Steelmen suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to the Welsh part-timers at Airdrie last Thursday - two days after Gannon was officially unveiled as manager.

"We had only been in less than two weeks so that extra week has definitely helped us," McGarry told Press Association Sport.

"It has also let the manager have a look at us and the way we play, so he has got enough time to shape us into a system that is going to beat this team," he added.

"He has come in and it's a totally different way from our old gaffer, Mark McGhee, taught us. There is no right or wrong way, it's just a totally different way.

"It took a bit of time for us to absorb that and for him to get his points across, but we are taking everything on board and hopefully it will be enough to beat this team."

For all Motherwell's possession and territorial advantage, Llanelli goalkeeper Ashley Morris was only seriously tested in the final minute when Paul Slane had a 25-yard drive pushed wide.

"We let ourselves down a bit in the first leg but I think we have enough quality," McGarry added. "It's going to be a hard game, I think they are going to sit in. But we just need to be very, very patient and hopefully our quality will shine through in the end.

"The manager has had us working on it since last week. We've seen the way they set out, 4-5-1, with everyone behind the ball.

"Hopefully we can be patient, get the ball into wide areas and get the ball in and use the height of big (John) Sutton to get on the end of things."
