Davis Cup - Murray blitzes Bram but Ward loses

Andy Murray rattled through his opening Davis Cup rubber in astonishing manner as he overwhelmed Laurent Bram 6-0 6-0 6-0 in Glasgow.

Davis Cup - Murray blitzes Bram

Murray recorded his first ever 6-0 6-0 6-0 victory on his way to levelling Great Britain’s Davis Cup tie with Luxembourg after James Ward lost the first rubber earlier on in the day.

The Scot needed just 52 minutes to beat retired Laurent Bram whose career-high ranking of 996 in the world came in 2006 and who retired from professional tennis four years ago to become a coach in his native Luxembourg.

Murray failed to be tested in throughout the whole match and had little to do against an opponent who notched up a rather embarrassing number of unforced errors as he wilted under the pressure of playing the world number four.

The Brit wrapped up the match in double quick time, showing no mercy to his opponent as he hit winners whenever there was a chance.

Earlier in the day World number 187 James Ward lost his match against Gilles Muller in straight sets.

Ward, who impressed at the Queen's Club last month, was rarely in the match despite going a break up early in the second set.

World number 81 Muller played excellent tennis throughout the match, however, producing some very smart shots to down the Brit and help his side take the lead in the Davis Cup tie.

The Murray brothers will now play a doubles match against Bram and Mike Vermeer on Saturday before today’s players switch opponents in the final rubbers of the Europe/Africa Group II tie on Sunday.

  2. It's so true Andy can't do right as far as the majority of the public are concerned. When he didn't play in the Davis Cup he was wrong as GB lost, when he does play and wins he's criticised. He may come over as a bit of a dour Scot but at least he's a Scot who can play great tennis and win!! Does carisma win tennis matches? We are what we are. Nicholas stop being such a child with your comments you must lead a sad life if all you have to do is post rubbish

  3. Yippe! We've won the doubles. We might just win the tie now, so long as Murray beats Muller. Oh wait, perhaps Ward does have a chance against Bram! Bet it won't be 3 bagels, though. I predict 6:2 6:3 6:4 or 6:2 6:4 if it's a dead rubber.

  19. Well done Andy for that triple bagel, even if it was against an extremely easy opponent! Phil, I donŽt think Luxembourg will win, even if Murray does have an of day heŽll still win his doubles match with his brother and Ward has an extremely easy match against the Luxembourg number two, so IŽm sure Britain will at least win 3-2, and IŽll be really surprised if they donŽt win 4-1.

  20. Give the guy a break! if he hadn't played Davis cup he would have been criticised - "too big to play for GB" etc. He turns up, he has an unbelievable score and still you're not satisfied! Well done, Andy - lots of players would have just gone on holiday after Wimbledon! best wishes from an English woman.
