MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Netherlands will be gunning for revenge when they take on Russia in a Moscow friendly on Wednesday, two months after being dumped out of the Euro 2008 quarter-finals by Guus Hiddink's men.
The Russians stunned the much-fancied Dutch 3-1 in extra time at the European Championship, securing their best showing at a major tournament in 20 years and a personal victory for Hiddink over his home country.
"This will not be just another friendly for our team because the Dutch will be eager to settle the score," Hiddink told reporters ahead of the match at the Lokomotiv stadium.
"So we'll have to be ready."
Hiddink called up just one newcomer, uncapped Spartak Moscow striker Nikita Bazhenov, for the re-match and is unlikely to make many changes from the team who beat the Dutch in Basel.
Two months ago, Russia were inspired by Zenit St Petersburg playmaker Andrei Arshavin, who made one and scored the other of Russia's two extra-time goals. Arshavin has since been linked with a move abroad.
The Dutch, who had Marco van Basten in charge at Euro 2008, will be under new coach Bert van Marwijk.
Midfielder Mark van Bommel might be the missing link in the opinion of Marwijk, who added his son-in-law to the squad after a two-year absence.
VAN BOMMEL'S INSIGHT
"I pick the best players and Mark (van Bommel) is one of them," Van Marwijk told a news conference.
"He is strong, can play good football, has insight and above all can be merciless."
Maarten Stekelenburg is tipped to be the first-choice keeper after the retirement of Edwin van der Sar, while Klaas Jan Huntelaar will take over as the central striker from Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has also retired from the international game.
Van Marwijk indicated that the Russians will have at least one advantage going into the game, which both sides are using as preparation for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.
With the hosts' domestic season having started back in March, Van Marwijk said: "All the Russian players are in competition, while mine are still warming up," he said.
But he added: "This will be my squad and they will get my confidence."
Van Marwijk will also have cope with injuries which have ruled out both defender Khalid Boulahrouz and midfielder Orlando Engelaar.
